Alright, this is my last #bcpoli #bced #covid #backtoschool thread before I get down to working full time designing learning for my students. It’s story time.
We’ve been invited by @rob_fleming and @jjhorgan to a party. They’ve had some challenges lately and money is tight, but feel they have to throw this party anyways. /2
So #bced #k12 #teachers and #parents get there. @Rob_Fleming offers everyone a drink. He’s got Coke, but tells everyone that an unknown number of cans can make you sick. Nonetheless, the party is too important to change the plans now.
He’s told everyone there will be dinner, but we show up and there are a few carrot sticks and some chips. /4
He did send a survey & have a planning session. He got a lot of suggestions – everything from vegan falafels to steaks to hot dogs. Good suggestions. But he already had the carrot sticks and chips, so that’s what he put out. He did hire a well-known chef to chop them, though. /5
The folks at the party ask if there are any other drinks. He says to them “you can have whatever drink you like. I’ve directed the bartender to do that for you.” /6
You go to the bartender and ask for a cranberry soda. There’s an embarrassed look as they pour you a coke. Rob comes up: ‘right, the bartender will pour you anything you like, you just have to bring all the ingredients to him.’ /7
The party isn’t going well. Folks are a bit upset, worried about the random illness. Rob is getting more defensive. He shows you receipts from a previous party as evidence that this is a good party. He reminds you that the carrots were chopped by a well known chef. /8
Some folks suggest it may be a better party with food. Rob agrees. He asks his longtime friends, also guests, to make that happen. They suggest that they could go to the store and grab some stuff for him. /9
Rob says ‘super – you can do that. Remember when I paid you back for the food at the party in May? Use the money you got for that”. /10
They stare at him. They spent that money already on the last party.

In fact, last time, there wasn’t enough for what Rob had promised to offer his guests. His friends had scrambled to sort it out and make do with improvised recipes. It took them hours.

/11
Long time acquaintances of Rob (and the previous owner of Party House) make do, as usual with what there is. They play music and make the best of a difficult situation. They head home and grab some extra food from their own cupboards when the food runs out.

/12
Unlike previous Party House parties, this time, some folks get sick. But they do the best they can. At the end of the party, Rob has gone, saying he has a new party to plan. The guests tidy up and do the dishes. Some hired cleaners disinfect it, focusing on the Coke cans. /13
@Rob_Fleming & @jjhorgan send out an email after the party thanking #bced & #parents for their effort & commitment to Party House. He & his friends @bcndp follow up a little while later to ask #bced to vote for them in the upcoming ‘BC’s Best Party Host’ competition.
