🚨 The private sector added only 1.0 million jobs in August, down from 4.7 million in June and 1.5 million in July. That suggests the jobs recovery is slowing down. #JobsReport 🚨
If we sustain the current pace of recovery, it will be a full year before private sector employment returns to pre-Covid February levels. If the pace of recovery continues to slow, the crisis could drag on for several years.
The median duration of unemployment continues to rise. It is now 16.2 weeks, up from 13.7 in July and 8.6 a year ago.
The number of people on temporary layoff fell substantially from 9.4 million to 6.2 million, but the number of so-called permanent job losers rose from 2.9 million to 3.4 million as an increasing number of temporary layoffs turned permanent.
Most of the private sector job gains (984K) were in service-providing industries, including those worst hit by the #Covid crisis.
The industries with the largest gains were:
Retail trade - 249K
Professional and business services - 197K
Leisure and hospitality - 174K
Education and health services - 147K
More than half of the gains in professional and business services were in temporary help services (106.7K)

More than half of the gains in health and education services were in doctor's offices (75K)

Most of the gains in leisure and hospitality were in restaurants (133.6K)
Several industries continue to be pummeled by #Covid:

- Oil & gas extraction (-1.1K) & support activities for mining (-0.9K)
- Auto manufacturers (-5.3K)
- The advertising industry (-1.9K)
- The office industry, or facilities support services (-2.5K)
- Travel agencies (-2.9K)
The industry losing the most jobs now, 6 months after the crisis began, is the nursing home industry, the epicenter of the health crisis. Nursing and residential care facilities lost 13.7K jobs in August.
State government education also shed 3.9K jobs at a time when we should he hiring more teachers to reduce class sizes and reopen schools safely, not fewer.
