Dear Students, #NEET is an exam that you can easily conquer. Last year 60,000 students from TN (49%) cleared the exam. Do not be misguided by politicians and media. Parents please don't put pressure on your children. Let them take this like any other exam.
Right now whether we like it or not the NEET exam is scheduled to be held. The way forward now is to encourage students to take it without fear and tell them it is not the be all and end all of their educational career. In no other State has NEET become such a big political issue
CPM ruled Kerala accepts it. So do Congress ruled States. All States have disadvantaged students. The fight against #Neet must not be fought over the dead bodies of our children. Headlining tragic suicides is wrong. Please read about phenomenon of Copycat suicide.
Highlighting suicides on media especially those for a specific cause is well known to encourage others to attempt suicide too. Media in Tamil Nadu and political parties playing this game, please spare a thought for those families.Long after your token visit and platitudes are done
the mother and father will have to live without their beloved child for the rest of their lives. All because you wanted political mileage or TRP's out of their tragedy. Please fight against #NEET through every available legally accepted means. That is your right.
I wanted exemption for TN for 3 yrs. Didn't happen. Fight on for the cause. But please don't highlight and glorify suicides of our children. If you do, remember that the next suicide that occurs over this issue is blood on your hands.

We speak about doctors and frontline workers who tested positive. What we aren't realizing is that the majority of them haven't had the illness. Maybe some were undetected but at any rate most haven't been very sick. To attribute this entirely to masks & PPE
seems naive. There are doctors I hv spoken to who say they have been exposed multiple times when masks slipped or when they dealt with patients they didn't know were positive. Some have even had #covid patients cough on their face. They didn't get the infection despite exposure
to high viral loads. Those working in hospitals are the ones exposed to the highest viral loads and most haven't had severe disease. Clearly there is something that renders many people immune to the infection even if they have never had it before.

Its #TeachersDay today. So many people to thank. But today I'm going to mention an extraordinary man who left a deep impression on many of us students at Don Bosco School. His name was Fr.Joseph Comandu and he was the Rector at our school during many of our years there
He was from Italy, tall with a flowing beard, twinkling eyes,a great sense of humour and a trademark blue head scarf. What set him apart though was his post class sessions on the play ground. After classes as students played he would come to the ground and seat himself on a bench
Students wd go to him and start talking about their problems. Their fights with friends, their problems at home, their difficulties with their teachers even. He wd listen patiently and offer his advise, often with a story to illustrate his point. And he wd instil belief in them.

As a Hindu who celebrates Vinayaka Chaturthi each year & as a doctor, this is how I think we ought to celebrate the festival this year.
1. E commerce sites/shops can take up home delivery of Vinayaka idols &other pooja items we buy.
2. People can order them online or thru phone
3. We should celebrate inside our houses with just family.
4. No public processions or crowds must be permitted.
5. If other State Govt.'s want to be irresponsible it does not mean TN Govt must be too.
6. Public safety must be the primary concern of any Govt.
7. In TN we have for years not had processions or public display of idols for Vinayaka chaturthi. All this started in the last 20 years.
8. Each one of us has a responsibility towards our fellow citizens and to prevent disease spread.
9. Crowding at markets need to be minimised

The Draft #EIA2020 Bill is a must read document. 83 pages but priceless. It systematically goes about removing several environmental safefguards ,transferring huge powers to Govt & dismantling even the minimal rights of the public to question violations #EIAdraft2020
Some highlights.
1. Central Govt can declare any Project as "strategic"without assigning any reason. No details of such projects will be placed in public domain.
2.Violations can be taken cognizance of only if reported by Govt or regulatory authority or by violators themselves
Public cannot question violations.
3. Violators can apply for post facto clearances taking steps to remedy the situation and compensating for the same. So you can start a project without all clearances and apply for them later

Tomorrow the Madras HC is to pronounce its orders on the OBC reservation issue for All India Quota seats in Medical education.
Here is a thread ...
1.State Govt.'s surrender 15% of UG seats and 50% of PG seats to All India Quota.
2. These seats are filled in Central Medical
Institutions on basis of 27% OBC and 22.5% SC/ST reservation.
3.However in State Medical College Institutions only the SC/ST reservation is followed and there is no OBC reservation for these seats
4. This has been the process followed since 2007
5. Political parties woke up to the anomaly that OBC reservation was not being given in the AIQ seats in State Institutions.
6.This matter has been pending in Supreme Court since 2015 though the candidate's challenge was related to the State of UP.

From August 1st what should be the plan for Chennai? My views in this thread.
1.Lockdown has been partial and relatively loose over the last 3 weeks. Yet CPR has stayed at below 10% or nearabouts.
2. Hospital occupancy rate for #covid has dropped significantly in Chennai.
3.Despite a relatively lax implementation policy on masks and little social distancing there has been no resurgence of cases in Chennai.
4.This shd give us confidence that the peak of the 1st wave may be behind us.
Time for Govt to start looking at the following
A. Open up public parks &outdoor spaces like the Beach etc. (they carry low risk with distancing)
B. Allow restaurants/tea shops to operate for dine in(with capacity limits)
C. Reopen malls with social distancing & compulsory use of masks
D. Open up places of worship with limits
