ANSWER: "North Korea has been abducting citizens of other countries for decades. Nowhere is the issue more prominent than in Japan. The total number of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korean agents is estimated to be upwards of 883 people.
Prime Minister-designate (PMD) Yoshihide Suga, who was elected to lead the Liberal Democratic Party on Monday, has been a leader for the North Korean human rights issue in Japan. When PMD Suga was Chief Cabinet Secretary under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe,
he also served as Minister in Charge of the Abduction Issue. He came to New York in May 2019 to speak at the UN during a symposium to address North Korean human rights issues.
In 2006, Japan passed “The Law Concerning Measures to Address the Abductions Issue and Other North Korean Human Rights Violations.” The Japanese government even has a headquarters dedicated to the abduction issue. Japan has been an active advocate for North Korean human rights
issues at the UN, leading as a sponsor of UNGA resolutions on the “Situation of human rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea". With his heartfelt investment in the North Korea abductions issue, Suga is poised to be a major leader for human rights in NK."
