Week 57 - 19/06/2022:

#ReceiptKeepers Streisand Effect thread on massive Johnson/Carrie #Cronyism scandal.

1) Times print edition features scoop reporting Johnson had tried to install his then-mistress Carrie into a £100,000 p/y job as Chief of Staff:
2) The huge story then mysteriously disappears from The Times and other locations repeating the accusations, as reported in The New European:…
3) @thetimes Journo behind the scoop, Simon Walters, says "I stand by the story 100%", and that he was in comms with No.10, Ben Gascoigne, Mrs Johnson's spokeswoman - none offered an on-record denial.

Rumours of a super-injunction against publication...…

A Sunday Morning Doug Ford 🧵

It starts with simple questions:

How is Doug Ford still a thing?
How is he polling in the high 30s?
Do people not see the in-your-face corruption?

How is anyone in this province even remotely enamoured…

…with a barely educated, barely literate, former strip mall hash dealer with a penchant for folksy populism, and blatant grift?

The man got elected on a platform of simply not being #KathleenWynne. And sadly, enough people in this province hated the thought…

…of being governed by a lesbian woman that they bought into it.

Remember when the most memorable plank in that platform was ‘Buck-a-Beer’?

But supporters will point to windmills and spending as excuses for why Ford trumps Wynne (see what I did there?) .

And yet…

In the short time (26 weeks) that we’ve been #KeepingTheReceipts, we’ve recorded 18 instances of MPs or public servants being accused of involvement in lobbying. 🧵
In our first week, Priti Patel was revealed to have lobbied Michael Gove on behalf of a healthcare firm, Pharmaceuticals Direct Ltd, over a £20 million contract for surgical masks:
The same week, Tory peer Eddie Lister apologised for failing to disclose that he was still being paid as an adviser by a firm that received a £187m loan with taxpayer money:…

As we conclude #KeepingTheReceipts week 10, cronyism once more takes centre stage after days of new revelations uncovering VIP contracts, donors/political allies elevated to key positions and the Tories pushing through plans to accelerate #NHS privatisation.

Let’s dive in:
1. On Monday Sue Gray, a key witness who played a major role in granting Greensill Capital formal access to Whitehall, was blocked from giving evidence to the PACAC by the Cabinet Office and Michael Gove
2. The same day, it emerged that Cameron had taken a salary of more than $1m a year for just 25 days work, more than $40,000 per day

Now that the country is trying to return to “normal”, expect the #Racism & #Retaliation to re-emerge. Some of the same people, even in our industry, who were involved in the #favoritism #nepotism #cronyism gossip and whisper campaigns -that comprise the foundation of racism…
Are returning to their old habits. Let’s not forget that some of these same people cried, protested, complained and railed against #SystemicRacism, simply because they had to, to avoid being exposed and branded as what and who they are. They key is to recognize and call them out
just as we did before #GeorgeFloyd was killed. I’m grateful for the allies of all races who’ve stuck their necks out literally to support racial justice in the last year. Without them, like it or not as @RobinGivhan suggested, it took those voices to bring the kind of pressure

Understanding $GME & the movement that’s going on #wallstreetbets vs #WallStreet Billionaires. People were buying $GME for a few reasons
1. To make money
2. Stick it to a bunch of Billionaires & insiders
3. B/c everyone is tired of holding the bag
What does 3 mean?!?
The #wallstreetsbets are avg Americans who have lost a lot from Govt lockdowns in 2020 to collapsing home prices in 2008. Americans are pissed who constantly see headlines of trillions being printed & only get $600 stimulus check and realize where the other Billions are going?
Now why was the #silver short squeeze a bigger deal then $GME b/c there are enough intelligent people out there who understand that we are in a fiat debt based system & owning all the precious metals & sending the price higher exposes the #greatfiatponzischeme ultimately..

For those wondering why we need my #CronyBill...
The UK’s Covid response seems to have been run not by those with expertise, but those with personal connections to top Tories – a chumocracy at work. Thread 👇🏻
The gov’s fast-tracked procurement process has allowed 10% of suppliers referred by a political contact to succeed, as opposed to 1% for others. My Bill would require ministers to declare these interests & help prevent some of the farces below:
One company was handed £108m to provide the NHS with gowns – which were then rejected for their quality. This company’s expertise? Apparently none – it was a vermin control company worth only £19,000.…

The Conservatives have created massive levels of public sector debt…:
in what historian Gaetano Salvemini argued in 1936, is as aspect of fascism, which makes taxpayers responsible to private enterprise,
2/ because "the State pays for the blunders of private enterprise... Profit is private and individual. Loss is public and social."

Quite apart from the obvious apparent corrupt incompetence in C4’s exposé, the UK government failed to publish details of £4bn Covid contracts
3/ with private firms... Good Law Project and MPs call for independent inquiry over apparent breach of UK law. Kate Bingham reports directly to the PM. She’s the wife of a Tory Minister, who went to school with Rachel Johnson. The public needs to know why she’s

The virus has exposed not only gross incompetence, but cronyism & corruption at the heart of government

With contracts for chums and billions of tax-payers money siphoned off to the private sector

And unnecessary lives lost

Testing and trace is a vital component of infectious disease control

Against the advice of public health experts, the government outsourced both elements of the process to favourable private companies, with no expertise

Resulting in a dog’s breakfast of incompetence

Deloitte was given the contract, of undisclosed value, to set up off-site testing centres & run the new Lighthouse Laboratories, bypassing existing NHS infrastructure

Deloitte then went on to outsource the running of the testing centres to numerous other corporations

Why am I (We) so mad about Kenney and the UCP? My friends and family ask me this all the time. Reflection: its not just the atrocious cuts and wars on our health (among too many other things to list), its much more than that.
Long thread, sorry!

I remember growing up, in #Calgary, born in early 80's, and being raised to be Canadian - you know: be friendly and kind, look out for others, be considerate, understanding, and thoughtful. Golden rule, if you can't say something nice.. etc.
And it seemed good. #Politics were snarky but, as far as I recall, it was still Canadian - with respect and decent dignity to the other side. It seemed like we had a certain pride to have our own brand of politics, Canadian style politics. It wasn't US attack-style politics.

The Times is right - Boris Johnson needs to outline his plans for a UK State aid regime.

The reason isn’t simply to unlock EU trade talks (although that’s important).

It is about what kind of country the UK plans to be in future.
It’s laudable that the UK proposes to become a champion of rules based free trade around the World.

However our credibility depends upon leading by example.

Therefore we should be creating the best possible competition law regime, not dismantling it.… Image
@OdysseanProject is fizzing with ideas about how to turn the UK into an innovation powerhouse.

Although realising these objectives is possible under EU State aid rules, creating a UK State aid regime is an opportunity to imbed these ideas within the subsidy award process.

The UK has traditionally invested far less in its businesses through #StateAid than other EU countries.

I welcome greater investment by this Government so we can #catchup and hopefully overtake.
The greater the sums invested, the more important it is that we have effective subsidy control rules, which:

- protect the #taxpayer from excessive subsidies;

- guard against #cronyism;

- coordinate public funding towards objectives such as #levellingup and #climatechange.
In my view:

1) the #FTA dispute resolution mechanism between 🇬🇧 and 🇪🇺 should apply only to material distortions of competition which affect trade;

2) below that level, the 🇬🇧 should still have #StateAid rules to achieve the benefits set out above.

I'm a former apprentice of the year, ran my own small business at 21, worked & consulted with ASX top 100 companies. In 2017, as a constituent, I approached (now) PM's office for support for promoting good governance in SME. Ignored. #mategate #auspol…
But sure, If you have someone who is a mega celebrity, multi millionaire with guaranteed income for life; who will appeal to 40 year old male apprentices....go for it!

THIS is how out of touch our politicians are.
