Friends, I just talked to my Dad about his voting plan.

First of all, bless his heart, he refuses to vote by mail 😡 But let’s put that aside for a moment.

He told me he’s pretty sure he’s voting for Biden.

PRETTY SURE
By the end of the conversation, he told me he’s 99.9% for Biden, but not before I had several heart attacks along the way.

Heart attack #1: He said he wanted to see the rest of the debates first.
Heart attack #2: He said Trump has done some good things.

I asked for an example and he said he liked that Trump is demanding that the Europeans put more money into NATO instead of the US shouldering everything.

I didn’t even touch that for the moment 🤦🏻‍♀️
(He also said Angela Merkel is a communist and so that’s why she hasn’t been as hard as necessary on Putin. I think any German would be... perturbed by this analysis, but ok)
Heart attack #3: He wasn’t aware that Trump has been accused of rape by over a dozen women and girls. He asked me to send him information on that and this concerned him greatly, but that alone didn’t make him 100% for Biden.
Heart attack #4: He’s concerned about Biden’s age and said that even though Trump is only 3 years younger than Biden, “at this age 3 years is a lot.”

For reference, my dad is 75 and he’s on all fours in my kitchen right now trying to fix my dishwasher
I don’t even remember all the other heart attacks, but I have one thing to say about all this.

TALK TO YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILIES ABOUT THEIR VOTING PLANS AND WHO THEY ARE VOTING FOR.

I’m still scared to ask who my Dad voted for in 2016. But I’ll get up the nerve eventually
In all honesty, it doesn’t matter.

I could ask him right now.

If he voted for Trump, I wouldn’t be surprised. He’s 75 years old and was raised traditionally in the USSR which means he’s a misogynist and a racist.

I would know because I used to be one too.
Yes, both a misogynist and a racist and I’m still fighting almost daily to unlearn both of those. It takes work.
Here’s another gem btw: my Dad said he doesn’t agree with my Mom’s voting decision making process.

I asked what her process is and he said she’s voting for who her kids are voting for; so, me and my older sister.

I asked why this was a problem.
He said that she should make up her own mind. I said ideally, yes, but if she’s not interested in it or doesn’t have time, then it’s ok to turn to people who are more informed.
If only all Americans turned to those who are more informed (and aren’t misogynists or racists), then maybe we wouldn’t be in this mess.

So I told him that my Mom’s approach is good and he’s wrong to criticize it tbh
Oh! I almost forgot. My Dad, who has a limited understanding of American electoral politics, says that this is in large part the Democrats’ fault for putting forward boring, old candidates like HRC.

“People want something new,” he told me. “It’s just human nature.”

🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
I mean, he isn’t wrong, and people DO seek novelty but that’s no excuse to vote for a sociopathic fascist.

I told him it’s really the fault of us being a misogynistic and racist society but he wouldn’t hear of it 🙄
Because, you know, he doesn’t 100% believe that racism is A Thing. He’s a bit better with misogyny, but not much.

FYI, a lot of this attitude comes from being raised in a socialist country so if you’re wondering why 🌹 Twitter is so often misogynist and racist, well...
When you give primacy to class above all else, you are necessarily sublimating gender and race, even if that isn’t your explicit intent.

So, that’s two debates so far without any mention of family separation or immigration issues in general, am I correct?

Why the fuck is this happening? ImageImage
Dear @TheDemocrats: Immigration is an ELECTION YEAR ISSUE.

It should be an election year issue each and every time so long as we have cruel and punitive policies which rip apart families and perpetuate abuse, murder, and torture.
You know why I didn’t have to tweet the GOP about this?

Because immigration has been their issue for a while now.

The Orange Moron won an entire election just by scaring white Americans with the specter of Black and brown people coming for them.

Immigration advocates were repeatedly screaming about this and no one gave a fuck.

I know of one case for example where a man was same-day deported from Otay Mesa, which had the largest COVID19 outbreak at the time. No test. No quarantine period.

theintercept.com/2020/09/03/cor…
Not to mention the fact that deportation flights continued unabated and no one was tested, planes weren’t cleaned, etc.

We are probably the largest exporter of COVID19 in the world thanks to our detention and deportation machine.

#AmericaFirst
When the borders closed and Americans were trapped abroad btw, @StateDept was supposed to help get people home and I know of one case where an American in a high risk age group was almost put on a plane back to the US with other citizens. A plane which had been used to deport ppl

Myself and other immigration activists tried to warn y’all about this back in FEBRUARY when this news came out: nytimes.com/2020/02/14/us/…

I take no pleasure at all in being right as our descent into fascism continues 😭😭😭
CBP and ICE have been barely accountable to anyone even before Orange Hitler came into office. But he made it waaaay worse.

This is from 2018: theatlantic.com/magazine/archi…
Today, CBP and ICE consider themselves accountable only to the President, and the current President in particular.

Their leaders have routinely lied under oath to Congress, defied court orders, not followed even their own rules, and more.

The NY Times Editorial Board begs for badly needed leadership from Orange Hitler.

But I fear and prepare for the worst and so should you. nytimes.com/2020/03/24/opi…
Let’s just say, now is the time to become as self-reliant as you can.

Now is the time to form mutual aid networks, get to know your neighbors, etc.
Now is the time to work out contingency plans for what you’ll do if the hospital can’t help you.

Now is the time to learn to reuse as many things as possible, to make food stretch as long as it can, etc.
