Here's the rest of the context to that quote. It's good to show that the authors represented both sides, although clearly favoring one.

Transdisciplinary speculation and review are incalculably valuable to insight and understanding, but there are pitfalls that one must be aware of when traversing scientific terrain that is not of their usual environment.
I respect the positions of other animal welfare experts and scientists. I also disagree with some of them, like in this instance. The notion of supporting a blanket ban on bestsiality is misguided at best, more due to culture and negativity bias than the actual body of evidence.
This argument doesn't have much weight, as applying the logic of basing your conclusions only on cases of abuse would crush nearly everything into illegality with its one direction view.
Put another way: "The argument in favour of prohibiting these (heterosexual, alcohol use, animal ownership, ect.) relations is clear, based on cases of assault and abuse" It's kind of a cherrypicking fallacy crossbred with negativity bias.
This argument would be more vigorous if you analyzed the frequency of animal sexual abuse cases and compared them to the general welfare of a population of animals that have engaged in ethical bestiality (as described by most zoos) without sustaining injuries.
We can do this to at least some degree. By looking at the studies done by Hani Miletski and Dr. Andrea Beetz, we see the preferred species for zoosexuals' companions are dogs followed by horses, preferred sex of the animal is male, and the most common act is manual stimulation...
...followed by oral stim. These actions mimic the stimulation used by vet techs and breeders. Unless the qualitative difference between those groups and a zoosexual is severe, would it not stand to reason the same physical act produces similar effects in areas of concern here?
This is far from understood within academic circles and is the topic of much debate in multiple fields. Drawing parallels between sexual coercion in animals and rape in humans along with proceptivity in animals and consent in humans proves to show how the goals we desire...
from consent (reduction in harm and not violating the autonomy of another agent) can be met by analogous methods.
Plus one of the biggest factors in evolutionary theory is mate selection, which is where the birthplace of consent likely comes from. Protecting one's genetic line from unwanted intrusion, especially when you're a female and reproduction is costly, makes strategic sense for...
...maximizing the copies of your genes. Hence the evolution of experiencing distress when a reproductive act is forced upon an organism, and experiencing reward when done with a freely chosen partner makes sense in the light of mate choice.
Peter Singer provides satisfactory reasons for understanding why interspecies sexual relations should be no more demeaning than nonsexual relations.

utilitarian.net/singer/by/2001…
What is it about sex, a usually prosocial activity, that is so demeaning? In times past, it was considered demeaning to allow a pet to share a bed or even sleep I the same room as their caretaker, Why don't we collectively hold this opinion today?
In addition, are humans the only ones demeaned by interspecies sex, which coincidentally was part of the process that made our species today?

Do Japanese macaques degrade themselves when they have sexual interactions with sika deer? Or are the deer the ones degraded?
What rights do animals have? Let's look at the Five Freedoms and the U.S. Animal Welfare Act.
Which of these does "human contact with erogenous zones at the animal's insistence or acquiescence" violate most or all of the time?
Consent is a key issue, but it isn't implemented consistently at all. As legal scholar Antonio M. Haynes masterfully iterates:
What is the reason we put a premium on consent in human relationships? Because it reduces likelihood of harm. Humans understand dependency, therefore at the request of the guardian offering a specific type of relationship or activity, they know that their basic needs might be...
...in jeopardy should they refuse and it displeases their caretaker, so it acts as a form of subtle coercion regardless of how many assurances are made by the guardian to the contrary.
I think one would be hard pressed to show that animals like dogs, horses, and pigs believe themselves to be dependent on their human caretakers, and that they will perform undesirable tasks based on the fear of abandonment or destitution.
Although as the Danish Animal Ethics Council and Veterinary Council have stated, holding the humans who choose to engage in private sexual relations with companion animals to a higher standard of responsibility for any injury or welfare detriment experienced by the animal...
...(similar to how being taught semen collection, artificial insemination, or rectal palpations by a vet tech doesn't absolve the owner of any responsibility for any injury sustained during these encounters) would be the most ethical way to go about condoning such relations.
The Danish Animal Ethics Council and Veterinary Council address this point succinctly.

And I'm sure animal behavioirists know fully well how strident animals can tell other animals and humans "No", especially when it comes to anestrus vs proestrus vs estrus.
This mare seemed to have no issue with putting a rude human in his place that didn't ask for her permission to hop on her.
