Former Cop, Mark Wells, testified today in opposition to defunding $18M. He was misleading & gave inaccurate info. He is pres. of Portland Public Safety Action Coalition formed under Tom Potter (former police chief/mayor)& exec of Bastion Security.Worked in immigration after 9/11

2)Makes claims that @DAMikeSchmidt said cutting the Gun Violence Reduction team was cut at the worse time. @joann4portland corrected for the record that Schmidt was clear, increase in gun violence was not related. He also innacuretly stated gun violence went up bc GVRT dissolved

3) We know that Gun Violence was going up before GVRT dissolved and didn't go down after it was developed. You'll notice the police won't publish the stats on gun violence for other years. #Copaganda

5)Wells understands some problems with policing and need for reform. He praises Robert Peel that started 1st police force in London (1829). This is a red flag, but even Peel believed in principles that don't reflect modern policing at all.

6)Wells has an education in criminology, which makes me feel he is disingenuous. His statements reflect deterrence theory(crime is prevented via punishment) that has dominated conservative think tanks even though evidence shows this practice as inefficient.Implies cops r solution

7) Wells mentions his nonprofit forming under Mayor Potter as if that's impressive. Potter was a former police chief that claimed Jason Sery was justified in killing James Perez an unarmed black man pulled over for not using blinker with enough distance. This cost city $350K.

This is just sad. I watched family break down in the middle of the street over the loss of #KevinPetersonJr and now Far-Right chuds are planning on harrassing a Vigil for him tonight. Ill add to thread about the threats last night and chatter I hear about tonight. 1/

On scene where #KevinPetersonJr was killed. Family is trying to get info. @ClarkCountySO says they need to call Camas police 311 and ask for PIO. Family says they already did that and there is no PIO. Camas will not have press release today

Qaulity Inn staff has been behind police tape all night, that family was not able to cross. They thought he was a cop. Family says, cops said they don't know where #KevinPetersonJr car was, then tow truck showed and took his car.

There are alot of people that have been problematic and put people in danger that seem to have corrected those behaviors, but I've heard nothing from them acknowledging their wrongs. Im starting to notice how many are working with these people as if nothing ever happened. I ...1/

..will still defend those folks from far right violence & state suppression, but that doesn't mean sweep shit under the rug. I'm increasingly noticing many treated as well trusted folks that are brand new to the movement (since May) and have twitter accounts that 2/

..started after beginning of #GeorgeFloyd protests. It is good that there are so many new people and many can be trusted to a certain degree, but treating new folks like experienced, well trusted and vetted folks is a problem. Trust is earned and shown through their actions. 3/
