Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update. I would like to acknowledge all of the healthcare workers across AB supporting our pandemic response. Behind every case is a long list of people working very hard. I hope you know your work is making a difference. Thank you. (1/12)
We underwent a system upgrade over the weekend & were unable to share numbers yesterday. Thank you for your patience. Over the last 4 days, we averaged 567 new cases/day. This is a large & troubling number. On Fri. we IDd 581 new cases & conducted 13,100+ tests. (2/12)
On Sat. we completed 13K+ tests & IDd 525 new cases. Sun. we diagnosed 592 cases & had almost 11,300 tests. Yesterday, we conducted 8,400+ tests and IDd 570 new cases. Our positivity rate has risen to 6.8% & almost 9% in #YEG. There are 167 people in hospital w/27 in ICU. (3/12)
Babies are still being born, accidents are still occurring & Albertans continue to experience urgent health needs. Our top priority is protecting the health system to ensure COVID-19 does not threaten our ability to provide essential care for all health issues. (4/12)
Sadly I must report 15 COVID-19 deaths since Friday. This is a heartbreaking number that underscores the seriousness of this pandemic. Every death represents a person who was loved & who will be mourned. My deepest condolences to everyone who is grieving today. (5/12)
AHS has confirmed 173 schools that previously had alerts have had 0 transmission – students & staff are back in class. There are active alerts or outbreaks in 252 schools, about 10% of all schools, w/778 active cases total. This incl 117 schools on outbreak w/50 on watch. (6/12)
In-school transmission has likely occurred in 99 schools, 56 have had only 1 new case occur. These cases - as well as those in hospitals & continuing care - are a reflection of community transmission. We need to reduce transmission if we want to avoid difficult choices. (7/12)
I’ve heard some dismiss COVID-19 as no different from influenza. I want to stress the differences. In the last 4 influenza seasons the peak # of deaths in a year is 92. To date, we’ve had 338 COVID-19 despite extraordinary measures. There is also no vaccine for COVID-19. (8/12)
COVID-19 has a greater impact on the health system. In the past 5yrs the max number of acute care influenza outbreaks in 1yr was 40 in 2017-18. To date, we’ve had 40+ COVID-19 outbreaks in acute care settings. COVID-19 is here & it’s not going away anytime soon. (9/12)
We’re seeing a large portion of transmission from households. 1 family member develops symptoms & infects immediate & extended family. Protect those around you. If you’re sick w/even mild symptoms, isolate in a separate room, use a diff bathroom & bedroom if possible. (10/12)
Wear a mask & disinfect surfaces after using them. Don’t share meals or spend time in close contact w/family, like watching a movie. Don’t leave the house, even if your symptoms are mild & even if it’s an important family gathering. That is how 1 case can lead to 10-20. (11/12)
In the next few days, we will start to see if recent measures, incl limits on #YEG & #YYC social gatherings are reducing transmission rate. If not, we must consider other options. We will continue to follow the evidence. It's critical we all follow public health measures. (12/12)

We have encountered a technical issue in the reporting system, so we will be unable to provide detailed #COVID19AB case numbers today. This has not impacted our ability to identify & follow up on new cases, only our daily dashboard. (1/14)
As part of our usual quality assurance process, the team discovered some internal discrepancies that needed to be addressed so I could feel comfortable we were presenting data as accurately as possible. Tomorrow, we will provide a detailed update for both days. (2/14)
I can tell you that about 800 new cases were identified in the last 24 hours. (3/14)

Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update. More than 21,800 people have recovered from COVID-19. In the last 24 hrs we have ID’d 477 cases & conducted more than 12K tests. 130 people are in hospital, including 18 in ICU. We are monitoring hospital capacity closely. (1/10)
I must also report 5 new deaths. Every death, caused by COVID-19 or something else, is a terrible loss for those who loved that person. I offer my heartfelt condolences to everyone who has lost a loved one to COVID or any other illness during these difficult months. (2/10)
There are active alerts or outbreaks in 249 schools, with 730 cases total. This includes 111 schools on outbreak including 45 on the watch list. So far, in-school transmission has likely occurred in 87 schools. Of these, 48 have seen only 1 new case occur as a result. (3/10)

Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update. We have crossed a tipping point in managing spread & we’re losing the balance we’ve been seeking. COVID-19 hospitalization growth is not above our trigger point of 5% but we must address the situation we are in now. (1/11)
This weekend’s #s tell the story. We ID’d, on average, 480 cases/day over the weekend. Fri saw 364 cases w/16K+ tests conducted. We ID’d 572 new cases Sat & completed 17K tests. Yesterday had 504 cases & almost 12,700 tests. 118 people are in hospital, incl 16 in ICU. (2/11)
Sadly, I must report 7 more deaths. Many are struggling with the loss of loved ones, from COVID-19 or other causes. We must change the trend of COVID-19 spread to prevent more losses & growth in hospitals & ICU. (3/11)

Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update. 19,500 Albertans have now recovered, almost 850 more since Friday. We completed 13K+ tests in the last 24 hours and identified 323 new cases. Our provincial positivity rate was about 2.5%. (1/10)
116 people are in hospital incl 16 in ICU. Our compounded daily COVID-19 hospitalization rise is 3.1%; 5% is our trigger threshold. The rise appears to be driven by a # of factors incl an increase in case counts & hospital outbreaks. 23% of COVID-19 ICU beds are in use. (2/10)
I am sad to report 1 new death. We’ve lost many Albertans to many different causes since the pandemic began. Each was a person – not a number. All of us who know someone grieving a loss can reach out & offer support. It is 1 of many ways each 1 of us can make a difference. (3/10)

I’ve heard criticism that Order 33-2020 was issued over the weekend. This timing was not to hide information from Albertans but to ensure school authorities knew about the order before it came into effect today (August 31). (1/8) open.alberta.ca/publications/c…
However, I understand the concerns, especially as we move forward quickly to ensure accurate information for Albertans. Effective immediately, my goal will be to post new orders Monday through Thursday and I will share when they have been posted via social media. (2/8)
My team and I continue to work closely with school authorities to provide accurate information and evidence to support the back to school experience for children, parents, teachers and administrators. (3/8)

Here is a summary thread of today’s #COVID19AB update. 9,754 Albertans have recovered. The active number of cases has risen to 1,191. We continue to identify high numbers of new cases: 97 on Friday, 67 on Saturday, 74 on Sunday and 65 on Monday from more than 34,000 tests. (1/7)
Sadly, I must also report five additional deaths since Friday, including three at the Good Samaritan Southgate Care Centre. My sincere condolences to those who have lost loved ones & sympathies to those who have suffered severe complications. (2/7)
One frequent question is why we closed classes in the spring, when there were fewer active cases, but are resuming in-person classes now. We now know much more about this virus. (3/7)
