Today is #InternationalDayofRadiology

125 years ago today Wilhelm C. Roentgen discovered X-rays. He helped save millions of lives and won a Nobel Prize. X-ray imaging and guided interventions play a 🔑 role in achieving #HealthForAll including during #COVID19
This year #InternationalDayofRadiology is dedicated to radiologists & radiographers who play a crucial role during #COVID19. Medical imaging plays a 🔑role in COVID-19 management, incl.:
🔸 chest radiography
🔸 chest computed tomography
🔸 lung ultrasound

Conventional medical ⚕️ and dental 🦷 radiography uses X-rays to visualize the internal organ and structures of the body - including:
🎞️ film-based techniques
💻 digital technologies

#InternationalDayofRadiology
A computed tomography or #CTscan uses X-rays to get 2D and 3D images of the body, showing details of organs which are not available on conventional radiographs.

X-ray-guided interventions are used for various procedures, incl. performing biopsies, placing tubes, performing fluid drainage, inserting catheters in arteries & veins & treating conditions such as 💗 heart problems, blood clots, tumors, trauma, etc

#InternationalDayofRadiology
Fluoroscopy is an example of X-ray guided intervention. It works like a video showing real-time liquid X-ray dyes (i.e. “contrast”) passing through different organs and/or objects moving within the body.

#InternationalDayofRadiology
Using radiation in medical imaging saves lives & may prevent the need for more invasive procedures, but inappropriate use may lead to unnecessary radiation doses. Appropriate information for patients & families about the risks & benefits is crucial.

#InternationalDayofRadiology
For many years after Roentgen discovered X-rays in 1895 they remained the only method for visualizing the interior of the body.

Today X-rays provide an essential tool for diagnosis and treatment of disease and injuries.

If you are experiencing violence at home during #COVID19 and need to leave in a hurry:

🏘️ Identify a friend, neighbour, relative or shelter you can go to
🔀 Plan how to get there
🎒 Keep ready essential personal items to take with you Image
During the #COVID19 pandemic, risks of violence increase due to:

It's the International Day of #medicalphysics

Today we commemorate the anniversary of the birth of Marie Curie in 1867. She pioneered 💡 research on radioactivity ☢️ & discovered it destroys #cancer cells faster than healthy cells, paving the way for radiotherapy
#Medicalphysicists are health professionals that play a🔑 role in ensuring quality & safety in the medical use of radiation by:
✅ enhancing radiation protection education & training
✅ strengthening radiation safety culture
✅ supporting radiation safety standards implementation
#Medicalphysicists 👩‍⚕️ play a crucial role in advancing health & saving lives around the 🌐

Radiation health technologies including:
🔘 diagnostic radiology..
💻 image-guided interventions..
☢️ nuclear medicine..
