1) The #pandemic appeared to take another turn for the worse Wednesday in Quebec, with #COVID19 outbreaks rising sharply in all sectors and hospitalizations increasing, too. In this thread, I will call upon the government to consider drastic action to curb this latest resurgence.
2) Since Tuesday, provincial authorities have reported 81 more active #COVID19 clusters. The biggest one-day increase is in the workplace (54), followed by spikes in schools (11), daycares (10) and health-care institutions (7). Outbreaks linked to events dipped by one to 41. Image
3) The number of confirmed #COVID19 infections is rising noticeably in the following regions: Saguenay—Lac-Saint-Jean, the Eastern Townships (where cases doubled to 90 since Tuesday), Outaouais, Gaspésie, Lanaudière, the Laurentians and Montreal.
4) The number of elderly residents suffering from #COVID19 climbed by 30 to 1,369 across the province. Deadly outbreaks have once again become a problem, this time in regional long-term care centres (CHSLDs), something the government pledged to prevent during this second wave.
5) For example, the CHSLD Marcelle-Ferron in Brossard — which has received scant media attention to date — recorded six more infections within the past 24 hours. Since Oct. 31, the number of people who have died from #COVID19 at that CHSLD has almost doubled from 12 to 23.
6) COVID-19 hospitalizations jumped by 39 to 573, the highest total to date in the second wave. In addition to admitting mostly those in their 80s, hospitals are treating more patients in their 70s. The spike in cases suggests hospitalizations won't taper off in the short term.
7) These hospitalizations are occurring amid a resurgence in emergency-room overcrowding not only in Montreal but across the province. See the chart below. At least two Montreal hospitals have declared staff outbreaks after treating ER patients with #COVID19. Image
8) The situation is no better in schools. The Quebec Education Ministry reported a daily spike of 92 #COVID19 cases among students and staff, setting another cumulative record, 2,899. The number of classes shuttered jumped by 137 to 1,174 across the province. See the chart below. Image
9) Meanwhile in the metropolis, community #coronavirus transmission is on the upswing in neighborhoods all over the city, as all the red circles in the chart below demonstrate. What’s more, Montreal posted 318 new #COVID19 cases Wednesday, the highest daily total in two weeks. Image
10) Although the number of active workplace outbreaks in Montreal declined to 49 from 70 a week ago, #COVID19 clusters in the food and beverage industry doubled from two to four. Hospitalizations have crept up in the city to 179 from 156 on Oct. 30. ICU stays remain at 26.
11) On this, Remembrance Day, let us also recall that since Sept. 1, 753 Quebecers have lost their lives to #COVID19. The chart below shows that Quebec’s #pandemic mortality rate is higher than those of the United Kingdom and the United States. Image
12) In light of the deteriorating situation, Quebec should consider new measures in the workplace (especially outside Montreal) and in schools while improving infection control in CHSLDs. Authorities cannot afford to wait any longer. Time is of the essence. End of thread.

1) Quebec has now reached an unusual point in the pandemic — with spikes in #COVID19 cases being observed at opposite ends of the age spectrum, among schoolchildren and the elderly. In this thread, I will compare and contrast these two groups.
2) Let’s start with schoolchildren. Quebec reported a total of 404 #COVID19 outbreaks in schools on Tuesday, up by 21 from Monday. This represents the biggest increase by far in any setting. In fact, the number of outbreaks in the workplace dropped by 13 since Monday.
3) In its latest report, the Education Ministry identified 147 more active #COVID19 cases among students and staff in schools across Quebec, setting another record tally, 2,807. What’s more, the number of shuttered classes jumped by 187 to 1,037. See the chart below.

1) In just the past four days, the number of #COVID19 outbreaks in Quebec schools and daycares has climbed by 15 across the province, reinforcing the importance of improving ventilation in these facilities. In this thread, I will return to the subject of portable air filtration.
2) Since last Thursday, the number of outbreaks in Quebec workplaces declined from 697 to 683. However, #COVID19 clusters rose to 383 from 374 in schools, underscoring how the #coronavirus in this milieu is driving community transmission. Outbreaks in daycares rose by six to 78.
3) In its latest report, the Quebec Education Ministry added 153 more #COVID19 cases in a single day to a record tally of 2,660, according to the chart below. What’s more, 27 more schools across the province were identified as having at least one case for a total of 900. Image

1) Health Minister Christian Dubé will travel Monday to the Saguenay—Lac-St-Jean region after it posted on Sunday its highest daily number of #COVID19 cases amid critical outbreaks in at least two eldercare homes. In this thread, I will take stock of Quebec's escalating crisis.
2) During the #pandemcic's first wave, the Saguenay—Lac-St-Jean was largely spared. But in the past two weeks, infections have risen in the region from under 50 a day to 155 Sunday. More than 50 elderly residents are suffering from #COVID19 in two major institutional outbreaks.
3) The worsening situation is also reflected in the fact that Quebec set a record 1,397 cases Sunday amid high levels of testing. Neighboring Ontario smashed its previous record by nearly 200 cases. What’s more, #COVID19 is on the rise in Montreal and more so in Toronto.

1) Quebec on Saturday ended its deadliest week since the first wave of the pandemic, with a seven-day tally of 121 #COVID19 fatalities. The same can be said for the city of Montreal, but most of the deaths are now occurring outside of the city.
2) As you can glimpse from the chart below, Montreal has to date posted 3,547 #COVID19 deaths, greater than all of Ontario’s tally of 3,220. During the #pandemic’s second wave, however, regions like the Capitale-Nationale, and the Montérégie have been observing more deaths.
3) In the worst example, 32 people have died at the CHSLD Sainte-Croix in the Montérégie. A manager has since been fired, but how could so many deaths strike one long-term care centre? Wasn’t Quebec supposed to prevent this from happening again after the first wave's carnage?

1) After a plateau in new #COVID19 cases in the past few weeks, the situation grew worse in Quebec on Friday, with outbreaks surging in eldercare homes and cases rising in schools. In this thread, I'll explain why the government must adopt a new strategy to fight the second wave.
2) First, let me show why the situation is deteriorating in Quebec despite a partial confinement imposed on Oct. 1. For the past two days, Quebec has posted more than 1,100 #COVID19 cases a day. Also, in the past two days, the province has declared a total of 53 deaths.
3) Probing deeper, one discovers the number of critical #COVID19 outbreaks in long-term care centres (CHSLDs) has nearly doubled to seven since Oct. 20, and the number under so-called surveillance has tripled to six. Outbreaks have also doubled in seniors' residences (RPAs).

1) Premier François Legault ruled out on Thursday easing #pandemic restrictions in Montreal during a plateau in #COVID19 cases. Turns out what the Premier did not say might be far more important than what he did say during his news conference.
2) Legault was responding to a report by the Montreal public health department recommending easing some restrictions, like allowing museums to reopen. He talked about the continuing risk that gyms, restaurants and theatres pose, but he did not discuss the risks in schools.
3) As I reported in the @mtlgazette tonight, one of Quebec’s foremost experts on infectious diseases, Dr. Karl Weiss, says that it’s schools in Montreal that are now driving transmission of the #coronavirus in the community, more so than the workplace. montrealgazette.com/news/local-new…
