This year International Day of Persons with Disabilities is highlighting that not all disabilities are visible. Disabilities are diverse and they can be dynamic. I have #EDS and I never know what my day is going to be like 1/
Sometimes I can go for a hike, other times I'm using mobility aids. I have to do a morning check to see how I'm feeling before I leave and that is just something I do. 2/
Although I have a genetic disorder that has affected me since I was a child, I used to be a ballet dancer. In fact, I used to dance 30 hours/week. Many people from my past would probably never have thought that I was disabled. I didn't think I was! 3/
I was so unaware of #InvisibleDisabilities that I did not think of myself as #disabled until very recently. It took until #diagnosis for me to identify, but that was because of lack of allies, support, and ableism 4/
I went all of my undergraduate degree without any accommodations, because #diagnosis is necessary to access the accessibility centre! I knew something was "off", but it took 15 years of searching, doctor to doctor, to finally have someone listen 5/
There are many disabilities that are invisible, but just because you cannot see them, doesn't mean they don't exist. I'm sad that medical #ableism prevented me from finding my community earlier. 6/6 #MedTwitter
