“COVID exploits every chance it gets... any time you meet more people - it raises the risks.”
Canavan asking people to consider everything very carefully.
Outdoors always better than indoors says Canavan, stressing importance of ventilation.
“Disinfecting surfaces and sitting two metres apart - simply isn’t enough to fully protect yourself.”
“We want people to enjoy Christmas with a small group of people who are most important to them.
“The most important advice is think about that group... plan and limit your contacts as much as possible from now on. We’re not asking people not to meet others but do it safely.”
😷 Canavan now urging people to help the businesses that have reopened at great expense by wearing masks and following their guidance.
🏐 This coming weekend and future weekends we will see big matches behind closed doors.
Canavan says so many of us would like to be there in the weekends ahead.
“Important to remember that homecomings and celebrations can’t take place this year.”
“Gardaí will continue Operation Fanacht - Over 100 checkpoints running on a daily basis. Patrols will also be carried out around shops and businesses to make sure everything is going safely.
“This weekend we have an opportunity to show how well we can do this... but everyone has to step up.”
If you’re a business and feeling overwhelmed by crowds and customers - get in contact, says Canavan. There is help and advice available.
Drop in those receiving PUP this week - as more businesses reopen.
“Those returning to work are reminded they must close their claim on the day they went back to work.”

The vast majority of countries remain on red - that means they must restrict movements for 14 days on arrival.

Finishing, Canavan says: “Respect” is the word of the weekend.
Respect for

- Gardaí.
- Each other.

Paul Reid: Everyone being given a lift by loosening of restrictions...
We're looking into winter in three phases of risk: this weekend (restaurants, gastro pubs opening), between next week and 18th (more people meeting), 18th-New Years (risk at its highest - mixing in homes)
Reid makes the point that close contacts in the period up to the 18th could very well "ruin Christmas" for some people. Be careful is the message.
