Taoiseach Micheál Martin speaking in the grand surrounds of Trinity College’s exam hall.
Asked Taoiseach if he was nervous of level of socialising before Christmas?
He says it was important to allow people back to work and businesses to reopen but he says personal responsibility will be a huge component of the time ahead.
“We need to give people certainty about the future - it would be in the interest of all of our peoples.”
“It’s very important we warn people and keep the alert high,” says Taoiseach on NPHET projections for January.
“We enter this phase in a good place compared to the rest of Europe.”
“Vaccines are coming... we’ll be in a new phase in the new year. We’ll look at things differently in terms of sectors... I cannot overstate the importance of our collective behaviour over the Christmas.”
Are you worried about vaccines leading to a false sense of security?
“We’ll take it step by step. I would see the arrival of the vaccine in the opposite way. That it would motivate people - ‘if we keep doing what we’re doing... we can get through this.’”
Micheál Martin says politicians will have to wait for vaccines in order of priority (some may be vulnerable, older etc but no special placement)
He says he’ll take his in the order of priority.
Taoiseach says there is ongoing review of allowance for student nurses.
He says he doesn’t want to go back to the old apprenticeship model. He says that would be a backward step.
Allowances being reviewed. He says Govt has no issue endeavouring to support nurses and students.
Taoiseach says you can’t sort pay policy based on a social media campaign or a Dáil motion.
He says that’s simplistic.
He says the degree programme is internationally recognised.
“If people want a wider debate on that issue on apprenticeship vs degree model - we can do that”
Taoiseach was visiting the Book of Kells.
He says it was “incredible, really.”
On Christmas 🎄
He says he believes people are very conscious of public health this Christmas. There is a desire to adhere to the guidance and get through it.
People are “grounded in realism” about what’s needed to be done.

Paul Reid: Everyone being given a lift by loosening of restrictions...
We're looking into winter in three phases of risk: this weekend (restaurants, gastro pubs opening), between next week and 18th (more people meeting), 18th-New Years (risk at its highest - mixing in homes)
Reid makes the point that close contacts in the period up to the 18th could very well "ruin Christmas" for some people. Be careful is the message.
