#IndianChronicles: Since yesterday, international media have covered our investigation, including BBC, Politico, Le Monde, EFE.
Here is what they found: 👇👇👇
In Brussels, @POLITICOEurope focused on the actors behind EU Chronicle – the same as behind EP Today last year: Madi Sharma.
They also reveal that MEPs @tobiszowski 🇵🇱 & @marctarabella 🇧🇪 claim to have been abused by #IndianChronicles.
On @EURACTIV, MEP 🇧🇬 @djambazki, who is cited as one of the authors of EU Chronicle content, declared that he never "submitted any text" and is "looking into legal actions to resolve this issue”.
But other MEPs participated extremely regularly in #IndianChronicles’ activities. In two articles, @oko_press exposes the continuous participation in this operation of former European Parliament Vice-President Ryszard Czarnecki 🇵🇱.
On MEPs not declaring their activities, @BBC interviewed MEP @daniel_freund who says: “there is little incentive to respect the rules when the worst that can happen is to file a declaration after you have been caught”.
@NicolasQuenel and @antoinehasday will tell you. The journalists from @lesjours extensively covered our investigation with 2 articles published and 2 more to come.
In France, one particular focus of @lemonde has been on some techniques (identity theft, fake media…) used by #IndianChronicles to produce pro-Indian content.
Contacted by @AJEnglish, Peter Stano (@ExtSpoxEU) – lead spokesperson for EU external affairs - said "the expose will be raised during the EU-India Strategic Partnership dialogue”.
Talking to @Reuters about our report, “UNHRC spokesman Rolando Gomez said the organisation would look into these specific allegations, and that it was aware a number of accredited groups were pursuing their own political agenda or those of governments.” reuters.com/article/us-pak…
In the same article on #IndianChronicles, @Reuters also said it “was ‘reviewing these allegations’ in its capacity as a minority shareholder in ANI, but added that it has ‘no involvement’ in ANI’s editorial operations.”
At 6PM CET today, @Lesjoursfr will provide a comprehensive report about #IndianChronicles' proxy recruiter in Geneva, who paid students in cash to speak at the UNHRC for resurrected NGOs. (in French) lesjours.fr/tags/indian-ch…
Finally, a timely op-ed published @dawn_com reminds us that too much politicisation of the fight against disinformation can become a danger. In every country, these issues should be tackled with a responsible approach involving civil society. dawn.com/news/1595669/m…
In addition to #BadSources, @Knack & @lesoir published stories on a Brussels-based think tank, following up on our previous work and leads. They confirm that the South Asia Democratic Forum received substantial funding from offshore & opaque organisations. knack.be/nieuws/storyki…
ICYMI, the SADF is one of the Brussels stakeholders depicted in our EP Today and Indian Chronicles reports. We showed that its creation was directly tied to the Srivastava Group's efforts to influence policymakers in Brussels. @lesoir sums it up here: lesoir.be/496897/article…
So, who are the SADF funders? Based on information collected by @Knack, the SADF had received funding from the 'European Foundation for International Development', 'Transworld Partners Ltd' and 'Euro Corporation Ltd', amongst others.
#BadSources - our latest investigation into how Indian news agency ANI repeatedly quoted non-existent bloggers, experts, journalists and think tanks spreading anti-Pakistan/China narratives in India. 🧵1/N
To ease your reading, we've shortened ANI's #BadSources to BS in this thread. 2/N
It all started when we took another look at IFFRAS, a Canada-based think tank we had already exposed in our previous #IndianChronicles investigations. 3/N
#DOPPELGANGER: How Russia-based actors cloned legitimate media outlets from multiple countries (🇩🇪🇬🇧🇫🇷🇮🇹🇱🇻🇺🇦) to spread disinformation designed to undermine the support for Ukraine.
This independent investigation is solely based on open-source information and is built upon the first leads from @tonline. We also would also like to thank @AFPfaktencheck for reaching out to us.
Today, the EU DisinfoLab publishes an Open Letter signed by over 50 leading experts on disinformation calling on EU policy-makers to tackle disinformation head-on in the Digital Services Act 👇disinfo.eu/advocacy/open-…
Co-signatories include researchers, educators, journalists, academics, digital rights & democracy activists, campaigners against hate speech and online gender-based violence. We have organisations from across the 🇪🇺, including: 🇫🇷🇩🇪🇫🇮🇧🇪🇳🇱🇭🇺🇱🇹🇨🇿🇸🇰🇸🇮🇵🇱🇬🇷🇨🇾🇲🇹🇧🇬🇭🇷 & beyond 🇬🇧🇨🇭🇺🇸🇵🇰🇵🇭
There is a tendency in Brussels to frame the question of legislating on disinformation as a trade-off between free expression or authoritarian control of our online environment. But there is a middle ground.
#Thread: How YouTube’s inaction facilitated the spread of the French COVID-19 conspiracy documentary Hold-up, the Plandemic “à la française”.
The French COVID-19 conspiracy movie Hold-up was released on 11 November 2020 & started to circulate on YouTube that same day. French fact-checker AFP Factuel flagged in Hold-Up more than 30 misleading or false claims linked to the COVID-19 pandemic. 2/n
