This 13th Century temple, famously known as Maa #Gangeswari temple situates in the Bayalish bati village of Puri district. Goddess Gangeswari is believed to be the Ishtadebi of Gangas of Odisha..
Bayalishbati(lit. 42acres) is also the village of Sibei Samantaray, the chief architect of Konarka temple. Different sources mention that during construction of Konarka groups of Masons were engaged at different places to receive the stones transported through rivers or rivulets,
to chisel them into sized ones & also to carve out designs on them as per the instructions of the chief architect. Bayalish-bati was one such place where Masons camped for the said purpose. Some believe that this temple is a prototype of Konarka but a closer inspection reveals,
that both the temples are quite different. Moreover it is quite possible that both the temples are built at the same time. The villagers never stop talking about the artistic skill of their forefathers and also they hold in high esteem of Sibei Samantaray..
At present though the temple is a live temple but is in utterly dilapidated condition which is quite visible.. the sculptures are eroding at a higher pace that we just hope it shouldn't face the fate of Konarka in near future.
Prachi river valley beholds numerous sites of artistic importance & this temple is a gem among all besides the Chaurasi temple, now facing the ravages of the time..every single stone here has carvings on it..
At most of the temples matrukas are found in a group but here an exquisite image of mother goddess 'Barahi' is found as a Parswa Debi. The four armed warrior goddess is depicted with drinking blood from a bowl with her tongue.
Check the hairdos & the intricately carved jewellery!
The time period of this image perhaps predates the time period of the temple itself..Most probably the image belong to 9th/10th CE..
Check the shield & the dagger she is holding..
Her attendants... the right one seems superior than the left one..They are also alike the mother goddess..
A four armed standing Ganesha as Parswa debata.
The king in a discourse, perhaps Langula Narasimha deba..& some sculptural panel from the temple..
The presence of a Mucalinda Buddha image & other images of Buddhist creed on the temple walls shows the wide spread of Tantric Buddhism in the Prachi valley area..
Am interesting image..Can anyone say what is depicted here..
This is how we preserve & protect our heritages..By growing bushes on them.. the roots will hold the stones together!
The presiding deity of the temple Maa Gangeswari.. a four armed mahisamarddini image made of black chlorite.
The 'patharabuha nala' passing through the village..Now exists as a large pond this rivulet was once used for carrying large blocks of stones to Konarka for construction of the Sun temple.
Of all the panels this one is my favorite.. they are defying gravity 😀
After debunked by @KalingaArya regarding the false claims about mansingh or Kesho Das Maru incident, this handle perhaps needs moral victory that's why still blabbering absurd..Get your facts corrected first 1. Read Akbarnama regarding mansingh episode.hw fazl didn't exaggerated!
2. Read Baharistan I Ghayabi regarding Keso Das Maru incident..The rajput attacked Jagannath temple and forced the khurda king Purusottam deb to agree with a humiliating treaty.
3. Read Kulke regarding the same Keso Das Maru incident.. Corroborative facts can't be denied outrightly.
Little known facts about Jagannath temple architecture, Puri. #Thread👇 1. The first instance of repairing of temple at Puri is assigned to Jajati I of Somabamsi dynasty in around 950CE.
He repaired the existing dilapidated temple meant for Nrusimha & Bimala.
2. Both the Nrusimha & Bimala temple bear the architectural elements of Somabamsi period & also predates the main Deula.
The present main temple(deula) was constructed after 200yrs of renovation by Jajati I. i.e. during early 12th CE by Anantabarman Chodagangadeba.
3.The Jagamohana was built few years after completion of the Bimana during the same Ganga rule as evident from Bada portion of the porch which is artistically similar to the deula.
Whereas Madalapanji mentions that it was built in 16th CE by Mukunda Harichandan.
