Good! As many of us have long argued, Senators have state committees to vet candidates for judgeships. Making those panels more diverse - and making their lists more representative of the legal community, including public interest lawyers. Quick story ... thehill.com/regulation/cou…
When I was a new lawyer in the SF City Attorney’s Office, we would have a short daily staff meeting. We called it the “LA Law Meeting” after a popular TV show starring Corbin Bernsen, JimmySmits, Susan Dey etc. We would go over cases lawyers and judges to see who knew whom ...
and many more tones than not, the opposing counsel or judge was an old white man. 1990s SF Law was still Pale Stale & Male. So the attorneys would often say to me “these guys are tough on women - they treat women like daughters or exes - so play on that and be the daughter” ...
Or a senior attorney would offer to “introduce” me to the Old Boys.

I would get indignant “I’m a lawyer not their daughter! I represent the City ! This is BS!” Head in their hands they would respond “we know we KNOW we are just trying to get you through a hearing” ...
then one day at our LA Law Meeting a male Afro Latino attorney asked “well whose ex or daughter am I suppose to be?”

The room got very quiet.

We got different direction after that: condescension replaced with “go in with confidence. Try your own case.”

PS He is now a Judge.
US law school grads are majority women, people of color, openly LGBTQ. Diverse attorneys are no longer “the only one” aside from a clerk or bailiff. BUT if they aren’t welcomed as equals in court, or treated as worthy in LA Law meetings they will NEVER get to the federal bench...
So @JoeBiden was right to ask for judge candidates diverse in identity and experience. We can help by making sure our Senators have diverse legal committee to create more inclusive pipelines to power. Together we can make the judiciary more reflective and its rulings more just.

Outrageous that Janet Yellen was paid for these speeches ... at lower rates than her male counterparts. Get on that investigation, Sam! #FairPay
I see from the responses that some of you miss sarcasm and others think a paid speech is de facto “corruption” ... shouldn’t we ask for the Yellen transcripts first? Maybe see what she said? Would any facts matter? Where are the guidelines for a donor or sponsor? Discuss!
Well I’m back from zoom yoga and read your responses. 3 Qs (so far) 1-who are sponsors (same with corp, people, media who fund podcasters and pundits)? 2-what is speech content? 3-does $/access change content/ behavior + what role do ethics lawyers play in such an instance? also-

The key word in the California law allowing people to drop off their ballots at official drop boxes is “OFFICIAL” — not the unofficial (and hence unlawful) ballot boxes placed by the California Republican Party.

A thread: nytimes.com/2020/10/12/us/…
California passed and Jerry Brown signed a law providing for official, designated, (ADA) accessible ballot drop boxes. The regs are quite clear. See the sos.ca.gov website: Vote-by-Mail Ballot Drop Boxes and Vote-by-Mail Drop-Off Locations sos.ca.gov/administration…

Let’s have some real talk about #ReopeningSchools. My view is from being a proud #publicschool mom + class volunteer for art, library, pumpkin fest, school spirit merch sales + field trips over the last 6 years. Cannnot imagine ANY of these activities being coronavirus safe. 1/?
What happens in a k-5 #publicschool classroom? Well you have the day begin with all the kids together on a rug - each criss-cross applesauce on their own designated square. Are YOU going to put 25 kids on a rug together anytime soon? 2/?
Wait you might cram the kids on the rug? OK then - let’s say a couple of them have hair lice. 🐛

The teacher will send them home. To come back, the kids need lice testing, treatment, and a clearance note. The whole class + teacher need testing (+ treatments if infected) 3/?

As a progressive I want people to evolve. To me it’s clear that Bloomberg needs to sit with his supporters and critics, listen to their concerns, and share whether and how he rejects and regrets his past comments and actions. We ask this of every campaign; he is no exception.
As counsel for #WeSaidEnough I hear from supporters and critics when a candidate’s history comes up. Voters must see these issues taken seriously on the highest stage. A candidate being held accountable may not change my mind about them - but it should change them for the better.
That is a key goal of advocacy: state your case and test someone who wants your vote to be accountable to you when they need you (not wait til you need them). Everyone in modern politics is facing a reckoning on race, gender, equality; many are progressing. That’s a good thing!
