How has religion been used to fan the flames of insurrection on Capitol Hill? - welcome to the participants to our zoom briefing today! We'll be live-tweeting as we go along:
Bishop @Mebudde felt a range of emotions on yesterdays events such as shock outrage, deep confusion, and alarm at the ways they unfolded with some predictability #capitolhill #washington #briefing
Bishop @Mebudde highlights there was no protection for vulnerable people, the homeless and key workers in the #CapitolHill area during yesterdays events
"truths unveiled" is how @wsvarghese described the events on #capitolhill, and feels the US nation has been anxious and so on edge, especially the last 4 years in many communities, and shockingly stressful. #briefing #news
Guest @ChineMcDonald shares how she has previously felt called vocationally to "detoxify the brand" of UK #Evangelicals- but has become aware its a place where white supremacy reigns
CEO of @PRRIpoll @robertpjones describes yesterday as witness to an "unholy amalgamation of white supremacy and christianity", and points out the religious symbols beings used: 'christian' flag of some US evangelicals, shofars being blown, references to Jericho etc
The 'strong man model' of leadership in US Evangelical churches has influenced the current situation, where pastors can stay in one role unchecked for their entire careers, says @Prof_Hatcher
#Catholics in the US are "romanticising the experience" and many are getting their information from @EWTN, which is " fostering the narrative of Trump" and has "become a political mouthpiece" says @mfjlewis
Dr @JoeUscinski says the #media is drawing too many conclusions on how many #QAnon are present at events based only on branded clothing, and not on polls which show a much more complex picture. He feels that "QAnon is big and getting bigger is uncorrect"
Q: From @HarryFarls - is this a turning point for religious leaders who are Trump supporters? @robertpjones "its worth remembering have had 4 years to see who #Trump is - yesterday is not a surprise"
Bishop @Mebudde endorses @BethMooreLPM as one to watch, describing her as "an enigmatic evangelical leader whose taking very bold stands against her tribe"
Bishop @Mebudde is touched by #Biden's strategy, saying he is "attempting to follow Abraham Lincolns playbook - if he will be successful, we cannot say" #news #capitolhill
Be wary of how the #media is more interested in the smaller sects of religious expression, say @wsvarghese, than how active #catholic @SpeakerPelosi opening with #epiphany before the events unfolded on #capitolhill
Conservatism, constitutionalism, and christianity as we know it, was NOT expressed as we know it yesterday - @Prof_Hatcher
The final note from @ChineMcDonald: "to move forward, the US needs to confront its "original sin of racism and white supremacy. We've now seen on our screens what this looks like. but as with #GeorgeFloyd's death, we cannot un-see it"

**RMC Zoom Briefing**

@ruth_peacock is hosting our latest online discussion about modern paganism and witchcraft as the festivals of Halloween and Samhain.

We will be hearing about witches on TikTok and a rise in Wiccan and magical practice among younger generations.
@jenny_uzzell explains that while Halloween derives from the Christian festival of All Hallows, others are rooted in pagan religions, ancestors, the new year and relationships with the dead.
'There's a real difference of emphasis - it's a time of reflection and a serious connection with the dead. In Halloween we think about ghosts and scary things, but for pagans it's about remembering those who have died and celebrating them' - @jenny_uzzell
