Read these prophetic words of St. John Paul II and see if you can find a description of #USA society:
"This view of #freedom [which exalts the individual in an absolute way] leads to a serious distortion of #life in society.... #prophecy THREAD 1/5
..."If the promotion of the self is understood in terms of absolute autonomy, people inevitably reach the point of rejecting one another. Everyone else is considered an enemy from whom one has to defend oneself.... 2/5 #USA#StJohnPaul2#prophetic
..."Thus society becomes a mass of individuals placed side by side, but without any mutual bonds. Each one wishes to assert himself independently of the other and in fact intends to make his own interests prevail.... 3/5 #USA#StJohnPaul2#Enemies
..."Still, in the face of other people's analogous interests, some kind of compromise must be found, if one wants a society in which the maximum possible freedom is guaranteed to each individual... 4/5 #USA#StJohnPaul2#Freedom
..."In this way, any reference to common values and to a truth absolutely binding on everyone is lost, and social life ventures on to the shifting sands of complete relativism" (Evangelium Vitae, 20).

THREAD Turkish occupation of Haifa, Mount Carmel and its effect on the Discalced Carmelites 1. Forced Exile 1914
The nuns learn 4 November that their fate is no longer in the hands of their long-time benefactor, the French consul 🇫🇷 but now they answer to the USA vice-consul 🇺🇸
2. Forced Exile: When an impatient Turkish soldier forced his way onto the property for an inspection on the eve of the nuns' departure, he investigated the Hermitage of Elijah. A snake emerged from the darkness and nearly struck the Turk. He fled in haste, the nuns rejoiced.
3. Forced Exile: The Carmelite nuns dreamed of martyrdom on Mt Carmel like their 13th c. hermit ancestors. The USA consulate would not permit that. 30 November 1914 the nuns departed for France by way of Rome - taking a long way around because of mines in the water

Carmelite historian Fr Elias Friedman:
"The extent of the Arab débàcle in Haifa can be judged from the statistics:
> In 1944, of a total population of 128,000, Jews numbered 66,000 (52%)
> in 1948, of a total population of 98,284, Jews numbered 94,718." bit.ly/Friedman1948🇻🇦
Fr Friedman explains how 4 religious from the Christian Brothers school in Haifa sought secure refuge with the Discalced Carmelites at Stella Maris in January 1948; desperate Arab families followed, until their numbers swelled to over 500

The "Latin Catholic" parish of the Discalced Carmelite Fathers in Haifa suffered a drastic loss in membership from 1944-1948 as families left the country to seek refuge in Christian Lebanon. Parish statistics show a drop from +-4,000 to +-500

.@silviojbaez presented an important conference to a @VidaReligiosa1 symposium in Madrid today on the theme, "In internal and external conflicts, mediation and reconciliation". We present here a summary of this morning's live tweets
THREAD 1/ @threadreaderapp unroll
.@silviojbaez states: dialog is the means to overcome destructive relationships that see the other person not only as a simple adversary, but as an enemy and only an enemy; one who has no family; one whose feelings or projects are not considered, because he/she is not human
2/
.@silviojbaez "We mustn't forget that the fundamental principle that should guide coexistence even in the toughest moments of a conflict is the inviolable dignity of the human being & that under no circumstances is the vulnerability or aggression to another person justified"
3/
.@silviojbaez presented a conference on conflict and dialogue to European religious at the @VidaReligiosa1 symposium in Madrid. We offer a few of his concluding thoughts: "Dialogue is a necessary factor for peace, perhaps not enough, but always essential."
THREAD 1/
.@silviojbaez speaking on the topic of conflict and dialogue: "There is no possible reconciliation without a patient, hopeful, self-denying dialogue, flexible in the negotiable and firm in the non-negotiable."
2/
.@silviojbaez "There's no dialog that denies reality & history, renounces one's identity, ignores the demands of justice. There's also no dialogue that builds a few plans only for a few, promotes accords/deals done under the table by bigwigs behind the back of the majority"
3/
.@silviojbaez "Diversity is not a secondary phenomenon in the existence of the human being; it is an essential element of humanity and is a condition of brotherhood. Humanity is called to live in history, which means contingencies, eventualities, differences, diversities."
2/4
.@silviojbaez "Humanity, people & nations, customs & cultures, will be & must necessarily be diverse because they belong to history & not to eternity. They are driven by dynamic forces, sometimes conflicting; they evolve, they progress, & sometimes they recede & degrade."
