BREAKING—AP is reporting that former Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder @onetoughnerd and others have been told they’re being charged in in the Flint water lead poisoning scandal.

Wow. About time for accountability.
2) Many years ago I fought against lead poisoning around the time of Flint water crisis. news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/…
3) Some said it was it was impossible to prevent Flint. We know the Michigan govt and fed govt had the data. It just wasn’t getting out. google.com/amp/s/www.wire…
4) Many said Gov Synder knew. We are about to find out how deep the cover up went. I’m glad justice is finally coming.
5) “Two people w/ knowledge of the planned prosecution told the AP that the attorney general's office has informed defense lawyers about indictments in Flint & told them to expect initial court appearances soon. They spoke to AP on condition of anonymity.”
crainsdetroit.com/flint-water/mi…
6) “The AP could not determine the nature of the charges against Snyder, former health department director Nick Lyon and others who were in the Snyder administration”
7) statement on the pending charges against Governor Snyder news by Flint pediatrician @MonaHannaA.

PLEASE don’t forget the pandemic—it’s easy to be distracted by Trump drama in DC, but we cannot let up on the other global & national crisis. #COVID19 hit 2 consecutive 4000+ death days in a row in US & well on its way to 5000+ soon. 🧵 on key priorities:

2) First, given how many don’t wear masks, we can’t rely on cloth mask guidance everywhere alone. In high risk groups and higher risk settings like crowded stores & public bathrooms, we need premium masks (KN95, KF94, FFP2, etc)—minimum surgical. We need DPA production for them.
3) We need HEPA filters for all schools 🏫 & potentially “upper air” germicidal UV for schools & public buildings that can afford it. Upper air UV is only UV for ceiling, which fans circulate air upwards to disinfect—yielding high 15-17x/hr air exchange, says Dr. @ShellyMBoulder.

NEW—FBI has now in custody the man carrying the Confederate flag in Capitol siege—Kevin Seefried, plus Hunter Seefried—father and son together. google.com/amp/s/amp.dela… Image
3) why do we need to fully prosecute and not give plea deals / wrist slaps? Because fascism rises when it is allowed to simmer. It’s like a virus that is not killed off quickly - it can become more dangerous variant over time if unchecked.

NEW—The Trump WH and then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions pushed their “Zero Tolerance” border crackdown in 2018 knowing that it would separate migrant children from their parents and despite warnings that US was ill-prepared to deal w/ the consequences. washingtonpost.com/national/trump…
2) “The report called the Justice Department and the attorney general’s office a “driving force” in making sure the DHS aggressively increased the prosecution of adults arriving W/ children—casting doubt on statements that WH “never really intended” to separate families.”
3) “The Justice Department’s “single-minded focus on increasing immigration prosecutions came at the expense of careful and appropriate consideration of the impact of family unit prosecutions and child separations,”

BREAKING—They’ve arrested the man who threw the fire extinguisher at the police on Capitol siege day. Who is he? Retired firefighter Robert Sanford of Chester, PA—he faces three federal felony charges including assaulting a police officer. Oy.
2) let this sink in— a man who dedicated him career to putting out fires 🔥 now charged with assault for throwing a fire extinguisher 🧯. Can’t make this up folks. wsj.com/livecoverage/t…
3) The extinguisher that Mr. Sanford allegedly threw is separate from the one that killed Officer Brian Sicknick, who was also struck in the head with a fire extinguisher during the unrest and died from his wounds, officials said.

The new Columbus Ohio variant, dubbed COH.20G/501Y, has been found in 1 patient so far. It has 3 mutations in the #SARSCoV2 spike protein, which may affect how it’s different. But nobody knows yet since it’s so new. Unrelated to UK, SA, Brazil variants.

wexnermedical.osu.edu/mediaroom/pres…
2) Again it was just 1 patient. New variants pop up all the time. Not sure if this is significant. That’s why I didn’t jump on reporting it like others did yesterday. But sharing it now since so many of you asked. I’ll update y’all if I find out anything intriguing.
3) But I am very concerned about both the #b117 and the new Brazil variant.

NEW—How good is “natural infection” immunity? 83% protection—People who have been infected by #COVID19 “may have immunity to the virus for around five months”, says study led by Public Health England (PHE). Possibly longer with more followup. 🧵
cnn.com/2021/01/14/hea…
2) “Two groups of people, one with no evidence of previous infection and the other with evidence of past infection. It concluded that past infection reduces the chances of catching the virus again by 83% for *at least five months*.”
3) 83% protection via natural infection isn’t foolproof against reinfection at all. Would you assume you’re invincible with those odds?

Another reason chasing herd immunity isn’t as good as vaccines.
