1/ Marcus Aurelius was the emperor of Rome from 161 to 180 AD

Most know him as the emperor in the film "Gladiator"

The real Aurelius was an incredible Stoic philosopher

With quotes like "Our life is what our thoughts make it."

but care more about their opinions than our own."

Be one."

if none of them know anything about the subject."

but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane."
8/ "The things you think about determine the quality of your mind.

Your soul takes on the color of your thoughts."
9/ "You always own the option of having no opinion."
10/ "Do not be wise in words

be wise in deeds."
11/ "External things are not the problem.

It's your assessment of them.

Which you can erase right now."

do not do it;

if it is not true

do not say it."

it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking."

1/ Mission Statements 🧵

I used to think mission statements were just corporate fluff

False words that companies created for HR reasons

I've slowly changed my mind about them

They are THE BEST stakeholder alignment & decision-making tool ever

EVER!

Need convincing? ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
2/ What is a mission statement?

At its core, a mission statement should answer this question:

*****Why does the company exist?*****

A profound question that is easy to overlook!
3/ When used properly

Mission Statements should guide ALL of the actions of the organization

It's like a company's North Star

If an activity doesn’t advance the mission,

it should be discarded!

If an activity does advance the mission,

it should be adopted!

1/ Charlie Munger turned 97 yesterday (thread)

Here are my favorite quotes, thoughts, and stories about this fountain of wisdom

Happy Birthday, Charlie!

More:⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
2/ Charlie Munger is a reading FANATIC

He lost an eye earlier in life to cataract surgery

He was later told by doctors that he was at serious risk of losing the eyesight in his remaining eye

His response to his friends?

“It’s time for me to learn braille”

What a mindset
3/

"Acquire worldly wisdom and adjust your behavior
accordingly.

If your new behavior gives you a little
temporary unpopularity with your peer group ...

then to hell with them."

If you've truly found the next $AMZN, $AAPL, or $NFLX and can hold for years, it's nearly impossible to overpay.

But finding them is hard.
3/ March

Millennials have seen tech crash, 2008, and now #COVID19

I'm worried that many of them will swear off the stock market -- the greatest wealth-building device ever -- for life.

1/ When to sell (thread)

I rarely sell, but that doesn't mean I never do it

Here are the 11 reasons why I sell a stock

⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
2/ Thesis Busted

This can be boiled down to "I was wrong"

The original reason why I bought the stock is no longer valid, due to

Competition
Legal Ruling
Management
Moat Narrowing
Outside force
....etc

Thesis busted = admit defeat and move on
3/ Accounting Irregularities

If I can't trust the numbers, how can I make decisions?

Companies like $LK are dead to me for life

Not all network effects are created equally

Key question:

Does 1 more connection create value for ALL other users,

or just some?

Ex: ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
Ex: $FB

If 1 more user joins $FB,

it creates value for a few hundred other users that want to be friends and connect,

but not for all 2+ billion users

($FB still benefits hugely from network effects)
Ex: $WU

Western Union can send money from anywhere to anywhere,

which sounds great,

until you learn that a few connections REALLY matter,

and many other connections don't

(to say nothing of the fact that it has been disrupted by electronic payments)
