A delayed update with yesterday's new #covid19sverige data. The Public Health Authority reported 84 new deaths, taking the total to 11005.

Oldest change was -1 to March 11!! Image
I've been pointing out since it happened on Nov 5 that Folkhälsomyndigheten added a new death to the very first day we had a SARS-CoV-2 death but Swedish journalists didn't seem curious and FHM didn't answer me. Now it seems they've noticed and it was a data error ... +1 to Nov 3
Yesterday also had a change to July 7, subtracting one death. Other than these changes, the oldest change was +1 to Nov 26 and only a handful of other changes in December, so we appear to have finally caught up on the holiday reporting lag. Image
I think we can therefore expect lower numbers on reporting days over the next weeks than we've seen over the past few weeks, but it's important to note this doesn't necessarily reflect a change in trajectory of the pandemic.
Wave 2 peak(s) of 7-day average mortality remains at 97 deaths/day on Dec 28 and Dec 31. Wave 2 now has more days in excess of 90 deaths/day on this metric than Wave 1 (and far more in excess of 80) Image
In a good sign, cases also continue to fall despite schools and workplaces having returned 2 weeks ago. The new restrictions clearly appear to have been having an effect. Image
This is reflected in hospitalisation and ICU data (Graphs by @CovidXIX) ImageImage
The next week is crucial in monitoring the effect of return from holidays. The government has also recommended a partial return to the classroom from Monday, as well as relaxed restrictions on youth sport. These measures can be expected to contribute to an increase in R.
The wildcard remains the new more transmissible variants. As of Jan 19 Sweden had detected 55 cases of B.117 (UK) and two of B.1.351 (South Africa). Analysis of tests that can detect "Spike Gene Target Failure" indicate the true number may be far higher.

folkhalsomyndigheten.se/smittskydd-ber…
As of Jan 17 approx 147000 people had received their first doses of vaccination. This is at a rate similar to other EU countries, but far below the UK and US. Israel has vaccinated an astounding 38% of their population. Image
Expect reported mortality numbers to show a significant decrease in the next week. This is a result of the combination of decreased lag in reporting and increased restrictions. Rolling 7 day average mortality should also continue to decline, but as usual will be 2-3 weeks behind.
The important metric to watch over the next 2 weeks is case data. Will the relaxing of restrictions and spread of the new variants push R back over 1 and infections begin to increase again, as has happened in other countries? I suspect it will, but hope it won't!

Sweden's Covid catastrophe in context - Did we squander a Nordic advantage?

Anders Tegnell has recently become fond of claiming that Sweden isn't unusual in our high death toll - that it's our Nordic neighbours that are outliers.
In this he is partly correct. Sweden is in fact significantly higher than the European average in deaths - but our Nordic neighbours are significantly lower - indeed *much* lower. Image
Various reasons have been put forth to excuse Sweden's performance compared to it's neighbours - population
density, immigration, holiday timing etc etc. They all fall apart under scrutiny, the simple answer is Sweden's strategy allows for significant spread of infection.

Do I understand this correctly?

Sweden, which has detected >55 cases of the b.117 variant, is now recommending any Swedes who have visited Norway should quarantine themselves for a week.

After Norway detected 2 cases.

This country is a parody.
And now they're looking at banning incoming travel from Norway

171 new #covid19sverige deaths reported today, taking the total to 9433. Oldest change -1 to Nov 30 (+1 to next day). Largest change +20 to Dec 27. Dec 17 increases to 114 deaths, 1 below the 155 peak of Wave 1 (April 8 and 15). A new graph today!
31 deaths currently have date unrecorded, they are added on the last day of the graph of cumulative deaths. The gap between lines gives an indication of lag of updates, and it is clearly the worst of the pandemic at present.
In the graph above, each line represents the data for the entire pandemic has reported on a given day, with the most recent data the longest line (orange).

With the latest updates, the steepness of the curve is now similar to that of wave 1.

So a week ago I posted the below tweet about the start difference in infections between Northern Ireland and Ireland

It was clear supporting evidence that policy actually makes a difference in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic.
Unfortunately Ireland is providing further evidence of this, but in the wrong way. In late October, Ireland announced they would undergo tough restrictions to get the virus under control, starting midnight, Oct 31st.

Here's how the situation looked then. Grim. Image

277 new #covid19sverige deaths reported by Folkhälsomyndigheten today, taking the total to 9262. The data includes a death added to January 4 2020, I am assuming this is an error and should be January 4 2021.

Outside of that, oldest change +1 to Dec 1, largest +31 (Dec 17.
Dec 17, Sweden has hit a wave 2 high of 110 deaths, the 4th highest mortality in a day since the pandemic began, and sadly confirming my prediction to Expressen in November that we would exceed 100 deaths in a day before Christmas. 😥 😥
I literally have tears running down my face right now. I did not want to be right about this. Each of these numbers is real person, with a whole circle of family and friends who loved them 😥 I sometimes feel that those in charge do not think about this.

Now, the the instructions I've received on my responsibilities as someone who has tested positive. It was issued by the Swedish Medical Association and I was given it in Swedish. The link said it was available in other languages, but no information at all on how to obtain it.
My Swedish is OK, but it's pretty heavy going. As a PDF there's no simple translate button as many have for websites either.

Not that you want automatic translators dispensing critical medical advice! So we're left with my bad translation. 😶

It says Covid-19 is a virus infection that's usually mild, but a few people get it seriously, lists the well known symptoms.

Explains it spreads through droplets, that when you cough or sneeze they get in the air and then can land on people close by or on surfaces or objects.
