THREAD: Given the nasty weather we've had the past few days, I've been asking city and county officials for updates on any efforts to get homeless San Diegans out of the cold. Here's what I can share for now. 👇
A county spokesman reports that inclement weather vouchers were provided for 325 hotel room nights throughout the county over the weekend. He says the county activated its inclement weather program Friday through this morning for unincorporated areas.
The program has been extended in the North Mountain and Mountain regions through Tuesday due to very cold temperatures. "The weather forecast will continue to be evaluated daily, in order to determine if additional activations are required," the spokesman said.
The county spokesman also said 578 homeless San Diegans were staying in county-funded hotel rooms as of today. 457 people were considered particularly vulnerable to covid and 121 were isolating or quarantining.
On Friday morning, 761 people were staying at the @SDConventionCtr shelter. As of this morning, the number was up to 806. I have asked for and am awaiting additional details from the city. #StayTuned
As of November, @CityofSanDiego and its Housing Commission had not activated their usual inclement weather shelter program due to covid safety concerns and staffing issues. Here's a statement a former spokeswoman for then-Mayor Faulconer shared when I asked about this back then:
UPDATE following yesterday's rough weather: The city reported there were 839 people staying at the @SDConventionCtr shelter as of today, up from 761 on Friday.

A @CityofSanDiego spokeswoman says 160 people were brought into the @SDConventionCtr shelter last week and that another 56 people moved from the street into the shelter amid Monday’s rainy, windy weather.
The city projects it will welcome more than 200 homeless San Diegans into the @SDConventionCtr shelter this week. The city says the actual number will depend on the number of people choosing to leave the shelter each day.
One of my questions and an answer from the @CityofSanDiego spokeswoman. 👇

The @SDCityCouncil just voted unanimously to extend the @SDConventionCtr shelter operation through March.

Context: voiceofsandiego.org/topics/governm…
The city will rely on $5.3M in federal block grant funds, including $2.7M originally allocated for small business support the city has been unable to dole out and $2.2M previously set to back an affordable housing property acquisition fund. Also $7.7M in unspent funds.
The city reports that 3,758 people had been served via Operation Shelter to Home as of last week. Of those, 1,186 people and 43 familes moved into permanent or longer-term housing. Another 217 homeless San Diegans have been matched with resources.

I’ve been getting (and asking) lots of questions about #covid cases at the @SDConventionCtr shelter & the status of the county's hotel program.

No new @SDConventionCtr #s to share (yet) but as of Wednesday, 115 shelter residents had received positive tests in the last week.
Here’s the latest I can share on @SanDiegoCounty's hotel program: The county says it now has access to 804 hotel rooms it can offer people who have covid/have been exposed who don't have a safe place to isolate or who are particularly vulnerable homeless San Diegans.
Chief Nursing Officer Denise Foster told me that, as of this morning, 387 people were staying in the county’s two covid hotels and 292 were homeless. This includes dozens of homeless San Diegans who tested positive for covid or were exposed at the @SDConventionCtr shelter.

Update on #coronavirus cases at the @SDConventionCtr shelter: A mayor's office spokeswoman tells me 115 shelter residents have now tested positive since last Thursday, up from 74 on Monday. A total of five staff have also tested positive.
Nearly 1,170 #coronavirus tests have been given since last Thursday and testing is continuing.

There have been a total of 147 postive tests among shelter residents and staff working at the @SDConventionCtr shelter since it opened in April.
The county confirmed yesterday it is conducting contact tracing on @SDConventionCtr cases. As of Wednesday, 831 people were staying at the shelter.

Earlier this year, @ToddGloria proposed a bill to add teeth to requirements that Prop. 63 money be spent. AB 2843 ultimately died in the Assembly. More on that effort (3rd sec): voiceofsandiego.org/topics/governm…
