From Martin's FB , he has passed but that sounds like self-identification to me?
and regardless of whether Martin has an Indigenous Identity you agree with personally or not, let's not lose track of what we were discussing and that is the fact, that one does not need to be part of the Metis Nation to be Metis. Which is what the original post was about. The
2 National Organizations in Canada who have a mandate to represent the Metis peoples of Canada. MNC and CAP/NCC.
@metisprof I know tone is hard to convey online and I hope you will reply as I am genuinely curious as what you mean by "substantial claim to an Indigenous identity."
I see you are a member of the MMF and this book was published by Manitoba Metis Federation. It says all 3 groups eventually assimilated into society. I am still not sure what you mean but that does not sound like "substantial claim to an Indigenous identity," to me. If we are
using the same measuring stick to be honest and fair./ "The Métis in Manitoba - by Jean Lagasse- MHS Transactions, Series 3, 1958-59 Season-Manitoba Historical Society-Indian Mothers of Eastern Canada were the first women to have given birth to Metis children on Canadian soil."
"The Métis in Manitoba - by Jean Lagasse- MHS Transactions, Series 3, 1958-59 Season - Manitoba Historical Society - less than one percent said they would answer -Metis- to a question about their nationality." - again, what are we measuring substantial against?
Howard Adams - identified as white. - "substantial claim to an Indigenous identity." ??
What it is to be Metis - Rose Bortolon - I said I was French, there was no prejudice against me. -- She identified as a French person -- You see how I can go on and on, who is the person who gets to make the call on what a "substantial claim to an Indigenous identity." is?
Personally I would think it would be their own community. / Steven Powley's and Roddy's self-identity as Metis people. The respondents gave no evidence as to their way of life, family customs and traditions, or interaction with other persons and families in Sault Ste Marie and
vicinity who identify as Metis. -- "substantial claim to an Indigenous identity."? -- Why I guess it must have been because Sault St Marie is now recognized as a Historical Metis Community. Did you celebrate that decision?
How come no one ever answers my questions ?

utm.utoronto.ca/political-scie… -- Is Chance Finegan Indigenous? -- If not, why is he weighing in on Indigenous Identity Politics? Why is his career based on Indigenous issues? Taking a page out of Darryl's book? No pun intended !!
Good, about time someone stands up to them. They work in half-truths and gangs and publicly shame people into silence. @CBCIndigenous - Use US Indigenous politics from Kim Tallbear to police Indigenous identities in Canada, when the US doesn't even recognize Metis peoples.
@ChanceFinegan are you aware that Metis are in the Mi'kmaw's constitution and bylaws since 1973?
"MMF supported New Brunswick Association of Metis and Non-Status Indians to 1000 acres of land" "brandon-sun-jan-12-1977-p-1- Support Claim-NCC and MMF they support the claim of the New Brunswick Association of Metis and Non Status Indians to 1000 acres of land"
"portsmouth-herald-jan-12-1977-p-28- Group backs Indian claim - NCC and MMF have told the NB Gov they back the claim of the NB association of Metis and Non-staus Indians." -- Hmm @ChanceFinegan doesn't seem like they were too concerned in 1977? This must be a recent concern?
@APTNNews Well coming from someone who is blocked from posting on their websites, I would like to say I am going to refrain from commenting, but not a chance in hell .. APTN only tells one side of a story, they control the message and the media and want people to buy this crap?
They have a few cases of what they call Fraudulent Identity and now they need a law to fine or lock people up? Using laws from the United States? When the US does not even recognize Metis people? Can you see it?
