#LangarPR

Milk and biscuit distribution by a gurudwara committee in Lucknow.

Value of material distributed may be far smaller than its show off, advertising and PR.

Thoughts. 1/n
According to a किंवदन्ती, once a follower of Tulasīdāsa needed a loan for a family wedding.

Rahīm was then living in Kashi, and known to be a rich and generous man. No needy would return emptyhanded from him.

Requested by the man, Tulasīdāsa sent him to

2/n
Rahīm with a letter.

Rahīm not only helped the man but also sent a humble letter to Tulasīdāsa thanking him for the opportunity to be of service.

Tulasīdāsa wrote him back:

3/n
(From where did our Rahīm ji learn such way of giving? As his arms rise in charity, his gaze turns lower in humility?)

To which Rahīm wrote back to Tulasīdāsa:

4/n
(The provider is someone else, who keeps providing for all beings, day and night! But when people call me the provider and donor etc, my eyes are naturally set down in shame and embarrassment)

This is the only way of real service. With humility, away from PR.

5/n
One who RECEIVES the service is doing a favour upon you by taking your service.

You by doing the service are not doing any favours to the world! It is God who has provided for everyone - who the heck are you!?

If this silent humility is missing, langar is PR not seva.

6/n
For centuries, countless Hindu temples have been operating annasatra and sadāvartas, round the year, 7 days a week, where any hungry irrespective of jāti or sampradāya can receive free food.

Here is just one such annasatra from Ayodhya. No jāti vichāra as you can see.

7/n
But we don’t tom-tom it!

Because we are taught that seva must be performed silently.

A dharma done by the right hand must not come to the knowledge of even the left!

It is to emphasize this silent humility that we are told by shāstra-a that a puNya greatly reduces

8/n
if it becomes known! And that puNya of silent sevā lasts for ever.

This Langar ho-hallā may make for a good PR and marketing. But it is no sevā. As useless for dharma as crying in araNya. Not an iota of Punya. In fact it is dangerous- as it fills the heads with false pride.

9/n
And then the pride of “we have fed you beggars” and “you should be in our debt” is also quite commonplace.

The food served with such pride is sinful food, pāpānna. And one who eats it will also verily accrue that guNa, not to mention the debt of a proud person.

10/n
But to close with the anecdote mentioned with the beginning, there is one dohā in Tulasīdāsa Ji’s dohāvalī collection of dohā-s, that is written by Rahīm.

Including a Rahīm’s dohā in his work is a way of Tulasīdāsa perhaps to pay Rahīm’s a tribute of friendship.

An estimate of the state level grains production, consumption, surplus and procurement policy disparities.
(Thread)

A] PRODUCTION

This is compiled according to the statistics published in 2018 by the department of agriculture, GoI. Have shown Sugarcane, Potato and Milk.

1/n Image
Few observations about the prod:

1. MH is missing since it largely grows sugarcane, cotton and cash crops and imports the grains. Among Southern states, Kerala is significantly dependent on imports for grains.

2. Punjab is extremely skewed on rice and wheat alone 2/n Image
which is not a good farming practice as it drains the natural soil nutrition.

3. UP is a clear leader in every crop (except oil seeds) as well as in dairy. MP clear #2

4. AP is #1 in palm oil, milk, fruits and vegetables, cash and fisheries. Biodiversity leader of South.

A few sentences in Hindi and Urdu side by side to illustrate the difference

The Indo-Ganga basin with rich Himalayan alluvial is the world’s most fertile land supporting the densest populations on earth.

Within that, it’s a myth that Punjab soil is particularly rich.

Here are the real factors that better explain the higher yield of Punjab.

(Thread)
1. The first factor is popular adoption of engineered High Yield Variety seeds since 1960s. While the other states were slow, Punjab was quick to adopt new seeds, not only of wheat but also of rice. (Giving up the rich biodiversity of 100s of Indian varieties is a wise policy?)
2. High chemical use.

Punjab gave up organic manure long back and adopted chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

For decades it is excessive chemical use leader. In 1985 it was using 6x India average!

While others too joined the race, Punjab still uses nearly TWICE India avg.

Dear Dr. Swamy,

Please recall your letter to PM Modi in May of 2016 demanding the removal of the then RBI governor Raghuram Rajan.

Therein you had argued, besides other things, that since Rajan held a US Green Card, his patriotic and unconditional commitment to India was

1/n
less than beyond suspicion.

You had further argued that Rajan could be called to a military duty by the US government, and that made his holding a sensitive post with the Government of India less tenable.

I remind you of this, only to draw an analogy. @Swamy39
