When my Twitter account, along with that of @ShivAroor and others, was blocked by Congress/UPA under draconian Section 66A, several 'journalists' supported Govt's order. A senior UPA Minister told me some of them had collaborated with Govt in drawing up the list. 1n
More. A digital free speech activist, who receives handsome foreign funds, sat in on meetings to help Congress/UPA Govt justify its patently unjustifiable ban. Later, he had the gumption to tell me how he had fought tooth and nail. Which, of course, was bunkum. I told him so. 2n
When confronted about the ban in Washington, DC by prominent mediapersons and lawmakers, India's then Ambassador to US brazenly justified the ban. The diplomat's colleagues in MEA were appalled. 3n
By the time all this happened, I had become used to political persecution. Nothing could have been worse than losing my job in 1995 and finding myself homeless with family in tow after a certain Vincent George complained to my then Editor.
#Irony comes in many shades of rust. 4n
Yes, @AbhinandanSekhr you stood up against the ban and stoutly opposed it, so did @madhutrehan (apart from others). I am indebted to you and everybody else for standing by me.🙏🏽 5n

At some point this misuse of Tagore's essay needs to be called out. It was penned in 1917 against the backdrop of World War I (1914-18) when politically created Western 'nation states' were floating their concept of exclusivist nationalism. 1n
The reference point was America. Tagore's comparison of India and US was problematic. The US is a politically forged nation state. India is a civilisational nation. India as it existed in 1917 did not quite reflect this fact. Tagore was also infuriated by Congress's waffling. 2n
Though Tagore was to repudiate his views, as reflected in this essay, in other writings (see next tweet) what @tavleen_singh and those who quote the same stray sentence, do not mention is his comment on Congress (see text in previous tweet) is as valid today as in 1917. 3n

Faced with rising nationalism in #Bengal , #India's British colonial rulers fled Calcutta in 1911 to set up shop in #Delhi which offered the security and comfort of surrounding loyal princely states. Durbar with princes riding elephants and horses was high noon of British Raj. 1n
Delhi was 'central' to prized "British properties" in #India and its cantonments. It was also the capital of the Mughal Empire which the British Raj displaced in 1857. The masnad of Bahadurshah Zafar now belonged to the British King Emperor. This was political messaging. 2n
What else did Delhi offer? Long summers in Shimla, shikars in Rajputana, access to Punjab and beyond up to Khyber. Control over wealthy princely states which had pledged suzerainty to the crown, and those like Awadh and Jhansi which John Company had smashed and grabbed. 3n

Media salaries used to be protected by Government of India appointed Wage Board which fixed and periodically revised wage rates based on circulation figures. Journalists (and press workers) in big papers would get paid more for same work done by journalists in small papers. 1n
To cheat on salaries many big papers would either submit fake lower circulation figures or float separate companies and hive off editions. One big paper was believed to have set up two separate companies for City Edition and Late City Edition. 2n
Govt Wage Board also ensured no journalist or press worker could be sacked or workforce reduced. This became a problem for newspaper owners as old printing tech began to give way to new tech, starting with photo typesetting replacing hot metal typesetting. 3n

Once upon a time Congress would take municipal polls seriously. Apart from expanding or retaining political influence, the idea was to keep the party's organisational machinery oiled and moving. It was also a talent spotting exercise.
Post-1984 holidays became fashionable. So.
Local elections are the stepping stone to State elections. State elections are the stepping stone to national elections.
Vacations between big ticket elections are the stepping stone to political & electoral oblivion.
Politics was and remains a 24x7 job for a serious politician.
Both LK Advani and AB Vajpayee took local elections seriously. A famous ABV quote comes from a muncipal poll rally in Rajasthan. ABV was garlanded on the dais by BS Shekhawat. He took off the garland and dramatically declared, in his inimitable style, "मुझे हार नहीं जीत चाहिये"।

This may sound rude. Creative artistes mentioned in this report have, in their lifetime, earned a million times more than those of us who have had to borrow money to build a house of our own, or spend a fortune living in rented homes. Entitlement is theirs alone? 1n Image
State patronage of culture may be a lofty concept wrapped in noble intent. In #India state patronage of arts, films, liberal studies and history-witing was fashioned on the Soviet Model: patronage in exchange of ideological support. The Akademis were instruments of propaganda. 2n
Unlike Orwell's utopian Animal Farm, in a democracy the state should not only be equally fair and reject entitlement to all, it must be seen to be so. To patronise a few while others wait in the queue, bowl in hand, is what Socialist India did till 2014. It's changing now. 3n

My interest in water and its role in national development and security was sparked over many visits to #Israel. The silent revolution triggered in #India by PM @narendramodi 's Jal Jeevan Mission which will take potable water on tap to 190 million homes has me hooked. @Vidurji 1n
Work done by Jal Jeevan Mission is huge. 30% of 190 million rural homes have potable water on tap in first year of NJJM's launch. Amazing use of tech to ensure a better life for people in #India This is a 'boring' story, so no media reports it. I'll do a thread and update it. 2n
Today, PM @narendramodi launched Vindhya Water Supply project in #UP covering Vindhyachal. The project cost is Rs 5,555 crore. To be completed in 2 years, it will provide assured tap water to homes in 3,000 villages. It will benefit 42 lakh people. 3n
