Today, as the Biden admin announced its family reunification taskforce, Ubaldo Ochoa-Lopez sat in an ICE prison - in danger of being deported.

He & his son, Fernando came to the US seeking asylum from Guatemala. What awaited them here was a cruel & stunning reality. #FreeUbaldo A bright pastel green rectangle divided in half with a photo
They were both separated during Trump's Zero Tolerance period in 2018 and remained away from each other for two months.

Fernando was only 6 years old when this painful and traumatic experience happened.
Now, @ICEgov has separated them again.

Ubaldo has been detained at Pearsall Detention Center since October - 4 months - and is in danger of being deported back to Guatemala, leaving his son behind.
Having his father taken away for a second time has already been traumatic enough.

Having him deported would be a devastating blow for Fernando and would leave this now 9-year-old child defending his asylum case before the immigration judge alone.
The moratorium on deportations may be on pause bc of @KenPaxtonTX's lawsuit, but that doesn’t mean @DHSgov doesn’t have the tools at their disposal to reunite this family & stop this father from being deported

Contrary to popular belief, deportations haven't stopped under Biden.
Pending legislation like the Families Belong Together act would give Ubaldo a way to stay in the US & seek permanent status.

We call on Congress and the @JoeBiden Administration to rapidly pursue legislation, so no other families are torn apart like Fernando & Ubaldo’s.
If @POTUS and his Administration are serious about reversing the damage done to these families under Trump, @ICEgov must release Ubaldo back to his son immediately.

Little Fernando has had enough pain & trauma in his life. This family must remain together & free. #FreeUbaldo
We ask that you call ☎️ ICE's Community Relations Officer, Norma Graebener at 210-283-4711 and demand that they release Ubaldo immediately.

"Hi, my name is ____ and I am calling to demand the release of Ubaldo Ochoa-Lopez so he can reunite with his 9 year-old son. Ubaldo’s A number is 215-636-496. They both came to the U.S. seeking asylum in 2018 from Guatemala..."
"...and were both separated during the Zero Tolerance period and remained away from each other for two months. Fernando was only 6 years old when this painful and traumatic experience happened. They can’t be separated again. Please release him to his son. Thank you."

The wall was a sham. This visit is too.

Trump is using his tried & tested formula of attacking immigrants in an effort to rally his army of xenophobic white supremacists.

And we're not here for it. Neither should you.

(A thread 🧵 👇🏾)
thedailybeast.com/trump-to-visit…
The attack on Congress last week established that walls don't work, yet the half built one on the U.S. - Mexico border remains a symbol of all the hate Trump has spewed & generated during the last 4 years.

As Texans, we will not sit idly by and let Trump use Texas and his racist border wall as a backdrop for his hate-filled platform.

We demand Senator @JohnCornyn publicly denounce Trump’s visit to Alamo and support the calls for his removal from Office immediately.

Big FYI to the media (and everyone else)👇🏽

Y’all should know better by now but with the #CoupAttempt we’ve seen far too many of these statements, so here’s an informational thread 🧵 on why this is problematic.
1) The use of this term is not only outdated, but factually incorrect. Much like the use of “underdeveloped” countries.

“Underdevelopment isn’t a stage of development, it’s a consequence,” as Eduardo Galeano writes in his book, The Open Veins of Latin America -> a must read 📖
For 5 centuries European colonizers and U.S. corporations, have plundered the Global South’s abundant natural resources in order to extract & enrich “1st world” foreign interests AND fueling migration north due to economic and social/political violence in the south.

Grassroots organizers along w/Black and brown voters have done it again in #Georgia 💪🏿💪🏾🎉

The election of @ReverendWarnock & @ossoff to the Senate with pro-immigrant agendas, makes the demands of our communities clear.

#MigrantJustice is a mandate.
FYI: Pres. Trump had no legislative success and was still able to make 400 changes to immigration ‼️

Trump's Admin showed us it can be done. Quickly & effectively.
There's no reason it can't be undone in the same manner.
"At a time when people are dying at the border, of #COVID19 in detention centers, & millions continue to live under the shadows, we have no time to lose. It is imperative that @JoeBiden take bold executive actions on immigration IMMEDIATELY and w/o delay." - @ErikaAndiola

🚨 While the election results have been a respite for many, in its final weeks the Trump Admin is still hell-bent on destroying the U.S. asylum system.

5 dangerous regulatory changes are set to go into effect on Jan 11, 2021.
raicestexas.org/2020/12/16/las…
The changes would, among other things, do the following: 🔽

1⃣Require all asylum apps be filed within 15 days of an asylum seeker’s first court hearing.
2⃣Assess a filing fee for all asylum apps, for the 1st time in U.S. history with no opportunity for a waiver of the fee.
3⃣Place onerous burdens on asylum seekers to ensure their apps are accepted by the immigration court, including permitting outright rejection of applications that do not conform to specific form-filling instructions and providing limited opportunity to remedy errors.

🚨 BREAKING: @AliMayorkas will be the new Secretary of @DHSgov.

Leading this department will be no easy task, but we hope that as the 1st Latinx & someone who has advocated for immigrant rights, he'll change the direction of DHS once and for all.
Mayorkas played a crucial role in the creation of #DACA as the Director of USCIS under the Obama Admin.

We look forward to the immediate expansion of the program AND the dismantling of the detention and deportation machine that was created under Obama and expanded by Trump.
@DHSgov is a department that was built in the wake of 9/11 to protect the U.S. from terrorists — only for it to now be used to terrorize immigrants.

The new Biden admin must recognize this and immediately change course.

Can someone explain who is "very well" taken care of and where these "very clean" detention centers are?

We're confused. 👇🏽 #Debates2020
