We're grateful the Biden administration is prioritizing undoing the harm of the last four years & we'll continue to fight until everyone in this country has the freedom to thrive. 3/4
🚨BREAKING: @POTUS has begun the process of undoing the #PublicCharge immigrant ‘wealth test.’ This commitment to reverse one of the most harmful policies of the Trump administration is a colossal step toward ensuring we all have the freedom to thrive. 1/4
The public charge ‘wealth test’ stoked fear & confusion in our communities, causing many immigrants to choose between feeding their loved ones and accessing essential health care during a global pandemic. The rule is harmful & racist. 2/4
Over the last 4 years, NILC has worked alongside our partners to fight back against public charge. We co-led & founded the #ProtectFamilies campaign, driving in more than 250,000 public comments opposing the rule. 3/4
🚨BREAKING: A federal court has largely allowed our case with @splcenter challenging a 2018 workplace raid to proceed. The raid took place at an East Tennessee meat processing plant where federal agents illegally targeted Latinx workers.👇1/6
In April 2018, dozens of DHS & IRS agents descended on the Tennessee meat processing plant, detaining approx. 100 Latinx workers. This created chaos & deep pain in the lives of these families, forever changing the community. @tnimmigrant has worked to support & empower them. 2/6
The court denied the government's request to dismiss claims alleging the IRS and DHS conspired with the Tennessee highway patrol to violate the immigrant workers’ rights to be free from unconstitutional detention. 3/6
🎉 VICTORY! A Brooklyn court ruled in our case with @MaketheRoadNY and @WIRACYls on DACA that Chad Wolf was not lawfully serving, and his memo was not lawfully issued. We are still reading the opinion and will provide more details soon.
@MaketheRoadNY@WiracYls We knew the memo issued by Chad Wolf was another cruel and divisive move that sought to upend the lives of over a million immigrant youth while Trump schemes to dismantle #DACA. This decision confirms that the Wolf Memorandum was not lawfully issued in the first place. 2/
@MaketheRoadNY@WiracYls The judge also granted a class certification in our case. What this means is that our suit with @MaketheRoadNY and @WIRACYls now represents #DACA recipients across the country who are eligible for DACA under the 2012 DACA memorandum — approximately one million immigrant youth. 3/
BREAKING: We just filed our lawsuit against the Trump admin on #DACA with @MakeTheRoadNY, @WIRACYls, our brave plaintiffs, and four new immigrant youth plaintiffs. The complaint challenges the legality of the Chad Wolf memo from July 28th. THREAD 👇 1/ cbsnews.com/news/young-imm…
@MaketheRoadNY@WiracYls .@DHSgov’s memo drastically altered #DACA by rejecting all first-time applications, limiting the availability of advanced parole, and shortening the length of DACA renewal grants from two years to one year (essentially DOUBLING the cost of renewals). 2/
@MaketheRoadNY@WiracYls@DHSgov Our complaint argues that the Trump admin’s latest attempt to dismantle #DACA side-stepped proper procedures, stripping DACA applicants & eligible immigrant youth of due process. It also argues that @DHS_Wolf is serving unlawfully and does not have authority to alter DACA. 3/
THREAD: For our new report, we interviewed several immigrant service providers and identified a common pattern: the new DHS public charge regulation generated confusion and concern in immigrant communities across the country even before it was implemented. ow.ly/hSbI50yy23t
Researchers @manatt estimate that as many as 26 million people could be chilled from accessing health, nutrition, and housing programs because of fear and misinformation about the rule. ow.ly/ImIn30qllr8
Our report helps uncover how that fear has manifested on the ground, including among groups not technically targeted by the rule: lawful permanent residents, U.S. citizens, and exempted humanitarian groups like crime and trafficking survivors.
We are deeply disturbed by weekend reports of 60+ Iranian-Americans, including US citizens, being detained for hours at a time at US port of entry by CBP. Negah Hekmati, a US citizen traveling with her husband & two young children, were held & questioned for 5 hours. 1/
If this type of profiling sounds familiar, it’s because the aftermath of profiling & targeting Muslim and Middle Eastern communities that ramped up in 2001 are still being felt today. @DHSgov can’t infringe on people’s basic rights or profile people based on their nationality. 2/
We must keep fighting the racism and cruelty of the Trump administration and hold CBP accountable. Local law enforcement & leaders must counter these divisive tactics by rejecting racial profiling and surveillance. 3/
