A little story: “Everything you need to learn to be a rocket scientist is available online, right now, for free."
Several years ago, @BenBlair (my husband) and @JoshStanley (my brother) learned that premise and it stuck with them.
If that premise was true (and they could see it clearly was true), then tuition rates should be falling — and falling fast. But they’re not. U.S. College Tuition is outrageous, and it gets worse every year!
In response, they set out to build the Most Affordable, Accredited, U.S.-based, Degree-Granting University possible — and make it available to students all over the world. And they’ve succeeded.
Permit me to brag a bit about what they’ve built and why it's so cool.
It’s called Newlane University @NewlaneU and big news: they just received International Accreditation from ASIC. The accreditation process is intense and lengthy and expensive. Building a university from scratch, and achieving accreditation is a BIG deal.
The pricing: Each Newlane degree is $1500, payable at $40/month. If you want to earn an Associates Degree & Bachelors Degree, that’s $3000 total—again, paid at $40/mo. If you already have an Associates Degree, and want to earn a Bachelors Degree, it would be $1500, at $40/mo.
For reference, the next most affordable 4-year degree I’ve seen offered is $5000.
They welcome Transfer Credit. Maybe you started college, but didn’t get a chance to finish? You’re not alone! It's actually very common. You can typically apply those credits when you sign up for Newlane, and that can cut your time to graduation significantly.
They welcome U.S. students and International students, and currently have students in Argentina, Canada, Mexico, Thailand, Vietnam, Italy, Zambia, UK, US, and more. Their professors and subject experts are also found worldwide.
Being an Intl student and earning a US-degree is out of reach for all but the world’s wealthiest. Just getting a student visa is a complicated and expensive process. Pre-paying tuition+living costs is even more expensive. So Newlane is an ideal option.
The university is new and small. They currently have about 40 students. Their intention is not to limit enrollment — they just didn’t want to focus on marketing/outreach until they achieved International Accreditation. Which has now been achieved!
There is no set schedule of classes, so you can start any time, and go at your own pace. And every course is Competency-Based — passing a course means mastering all the course goals, not just sitting through lectures.
Newlane launched with an Associates Degree in General Studies, and a Bachelors Degree in Philosophy. They had their first graduate last April and she went on to be accepted to a prestigious graduate program at the University of Nottingham.
Why Philosophy? Philosophy is one of the oldest degrees and signifies a true interest in learning. It gives you skills in critical thinking, being able to read well, write well, how to construct and critique arguments — skills that are valuable beyond earning your degree.
Also because Ben was charged with creating the first degree and his background is in philosophy. He earned two Masters and a PhD from Columbia in Philosophy & Education. He wrote the Newlane University Manifesto:
When you sign up, there's a one-time $249 registration fee. Try the program for 30 days and if it's not a good fit, no worries, they'll refund the fee. And you can pause the $40/mo at any time — like if there's a family matter that prevents you from studying for a few months.
If you have questions or would like to talk to them about Rising Tuition Costs, the Student Loan Crisis, Competency-Based Education, or Online Higher Ed, they would love to hear from you. They’re up for podcasts, Q&A, interviews, anything you like. DM them at: @NewlaneU
Want to know more? Here’s a Q&A I did with @benblair last week. It gives a good overview of Newlane University and answers the 25 most frequent questions they receive:
A simple thread in which we eliminate poverty in America, build the economy, and ensure Democrats are re-elected, by admitting money is pretend. — Written by Gabrielle Blair, Designer, Mother-of-six, and Twitter’s Premiere Economist. 1/
Premise 1: Our country has enough money to solve every issue we have. More than enough money. Not exaggerating.
Example: If America was attacked today and went to war, our military would immediately have access to unlimited (unlimited!) amounts of money to fund the war. 2/
Premise 2: The National Debt is meaningless. New research particular to our country, shows that increasing or paying down the debt doesn’t really matter. And no politician actually cares about the national debt. They are lying if they say they do. 3/
Hey IQ people. Talking about your IQ does the opposite of what you think it does. When people see your IQ in your bio/handle, they don’t think: Oh! He’s a smartie!
Instead they think: Oh dear. Poor dummy hasn’t figured out IQ scores are meaningless.
At best, we could say an IQ test is a not-very-good personality guide, though much less useful than Myers-Briggs, Enneagram, or Astrology, because it doesn’t even attempt to help you self-reflect or improve your interpersonal relationships.
That said, anyone who talks about their IQ is almost guaranteed to be a jerk. So I guess we could say the test is useful to help identify jerks? IQ test as jerk predictor?
I use Twitter to amplify voices I appreciate, and sometimes I write threads. For easy access, I'm going to pin this list of the most popular threads I've written:
1) On Men & Abortion: All Unwanted Pregnancies Are Caused By Irresponsible Ejaculations
A man I’m related to (calls himself a Republican, but doesn’t like Trump) wrote a Facebook post calling for unity. He didn't say the word unity, he used language like "building bridges" and "validating viewpoints from both sides."

He’s not the only one. Republicans everywhere are waving the unity banner. Let’s not dwell in the past, they say. Sure, we called for a mob to kill Pence and encouraged people who built bombs to storm the Capitol, but it’s time to move forward, let’s forgive and forget asap.

And I just want to say as your Internet Mom: Hey Kiddos, you're skipping some steps. Coming together WON'T happen, literally CAN NOT happen, until there is justice.
How were you taught about repentance? As a Mormon, I was taught these 5 specific steps: 1) Recognize and admit to yourself you did something wrong. 2) Feel sincerely sorry about it. 3) Stop doing this wrong thing.
4) Admit publicly that you did wrong — especially to people who were affected by this thing you did wrong. 5) Make restitution for the thing you did wrong.
As a kid, this all seemed very straightforward. The only step that was particularly challenging to me was Step 4,
because it was embarrassing. But otherwise, the approach seemed easy enough.
As an adult, it’s Step 5 that is much less straightforward. A 9 year old who stole a candy bar from her brother’s room, can simply give it back or replace it in order to make restitution.
There are a lot of people who are anti-Trump but still consider themselves Conservative, who are quite delighted with Barrett being placed on the Supreme Court.
It has me quite confused and it made me think of this tweet.
It could easily be argued that everything on that list is something Progressives stand for. And I realized I don’t get it—I don’t understand why anyone (never-trumper or otherwise) would still identify as Conservative. Whether Trump wins or loses, what is it Conservatives want?
I grew up in a small politically conservative town in Utah. My dad was a Democrat, my mom was a Republican. I was always taught that debate and opposing views were good and healthy for our country. In some instances, I can see how that’s true.
