Mi gente, #langchat #educolor #earlylang it’s going to look like I’m subtweeting but I’m not. I’m writing this tweet to create awareness yet again about the importance of names. There are many excellent orgs out there that are interested in my work yet they still misspell my name
Yes, I’m Latina. Yes, I’m Chilean. Yes, my name is French. You know, there’s this thing called #immigration and my great grandfather happened to partake in it during the early 1900s. My name is French and my last name is too because of my heritage #langchat #earlylang #educolor
I know a lot of people likes to call me Fran because Françoise sounds intimidating 👀 and for the most part I’m ok with it as long as it doesn’t sound anglicized. Now, when talking about me because I am presenting for u or you’re quoting my work, you must write my name correctly.
Part of my heritage is French and the story behind the picking of my name has to do with my family and a certain French artist called Françoise Hardy. I wrote a whole article about the importance of names and yet #langchat #earlylang #educolor
My name gets butchered daily. I once had to send an all faculty email because there was an administrator who kept writing Francois - no ç no E at the end and did it constantly even after I corrected it #langchat #earlylang #educolor
You see - My pronouns are she/ella and François is usually meant for he/el

That e at the end changes the gender. So the lack if ç not only changes the pronunciation but the lack of e missgenders me.

Another thing is announcing/naming me on my professional capacity by using my nickname. You see, Fran is not my name. As I said, I’m ok with it in colloquial settings but professionally, I’d like my full name, on that flyer, newsletter, mention, etc

#langchat #earlylang
I have been gaslighted about this in the past but I won’t tolerate it any longer, especially in circles related to #worldlanguage or #education
If you want me to collaborate, present and advocate for you, you better start spelling my name correctly #langchat #earlylang

Mi gente, I am reposting myself because I have already been asked and seen posts from WL teachers talking about #blackhistorymonth and I have been asked if I have created a unit or resources.

So #langchat
I want to make myself clear here. I don’t believe the history of accomplishments of BIPOC or any minoritized community should be relegated to a month. I believe the 🇺🇸 school calendar - the timeline in history books have been designed to do so #langchat #BlackHistoryMonth
It exalts the accomplishments and heroicity of yt men and it has been peppered with months dedicated to other communities for the sake of shallow multiculturality. Tokenism at its best #langchat #BlackHistoryMonth
