#Thread My heart and mind are lost in the thoughts of the great temple of #Chidambaram. For Shiva devotees of TN, this is THE kovil, just like for devotees of Shri Vishnu, Srirangam is THE kovil. This is also one of the few temples in India that is managed by hereditary priests.
The temple has 4 Rajgopurams in 4 cardinal directions, built at different times and yet, all 4 Gopurams are uniform in size, structure and form. All are 7-storeyed and 135 feet tall. All have 13 Copper Kalashas on them.
Belief is that temple of Chidambaram IS Lord Shiva. The gold-roofed garbhgriha has d Lord manifested in 3 forms:
- Murti of Lord Natarajar, as the Sakala form
- semi-form Crystal lingam, as the Sakala nishkala form
- formless - the empty Space known as Chidambara Rahasyam.
Each of the Gopurams have the display all the 108 karanas or dance poses of Lord Shiva as found in the Natya Shastra by Bharata Muni. These postures form the foundation of Bharatanatyam even today.
The roof of Chitrambalam Is made of 21600 gold plates, inscribed with Panchakshara mantra, held together with 72000 nails. As per Yogic philosophy, humans take 21600 breaths in a day and the prana is spread through the human body through 72000 nadi or veins. - Pic via internet
The golden roof was made possible by the grace of the Chozha king, Parantaka in the 10th century. Parantaka described himself as the ‘bee at the lotus feet of Lord Shiva’ in the inscriptions. The #Chidambaram temple was the coronation temple of the Chozhas.
The temple is fully managed by the Chidambaram Deekshithars, an ancient sect of Vaidik Brahmins who have been the custodians of this temple since antiquity. This is one of the few popular temples in TN that is not under the grasp of HRNCE.
Visiting #Chidambaram was like being transported to another world, a world where devotion reigned Supreme. The Chidambara Rahasya is not the empty space is the garbhgriha, it is the act of lifting the veil of illusion, to discover the Lord within. #tamizhtales (Pic via Internet

#Thread I had asked people to share 3 good things that they did/happened to them in #2020 on @Facebook@Twitter and @instagram. Totally more than a 1000 people replied, of different ages, different professions, different regions. The comments were full of insights for me.
Lesson 1. The responses were very diverse, but some common things stood out. Most people mentioned ‘spending time with the family’ as one of the top positives of this year. And indeed, #WFH as well as the forced lockdown has made us all look at family togetherness in a new light.
Lesson 2. Most respondents also mentioned focus on wellness and health as a key area saw improvement. Many people shared inspiring stories of weight loss, of starting an exercise regimen, yoga, meditation, practices that helped improve both physical as well as mental health.
A thread on #krishnapuram temple, near Thirunelveli, TN. Even in a land full of ancient temples full of sculptural treasures, the Arulmigu Venkatachalapathy temple at Krishnapuram stands out for its unique sculptures. #TamizhTales
Located barely 8 kms from Thirunelveli, the #krishnapuram temple is a storehouse of exquisite sculptures carved during the Madurai Nayaka period. Inscriptions say the temple was built by Krishnappa Nayak, after whom the place is named. #TamizhTales
The temple is spread over an area of 1.8 acres. Originally, the temple had three praharams, built from granite. But the outermost praharam was demolished by an Izlamic general Chanda Sahib at the orders of Nawab of Arcot. The stones were used to build the fort of Palayamkottai!
#Thread on #divyadesams. Divya Desams are Sri Vishnu temples which the 12 Vaishnava saints or the Azhwars have sung in their hymns in praise of Sri Vishnu. There are 108 Divya Desams, 106 can be visited in mortal life. The other two are in the celestial abode of Sri Vishnu.
#azhwar means ‘immersed’. Azhwars are considered to be devotees of Vishnu who have fully immersed themselves in #bhakti. They lived between 5th-8th centuries CE, composing hymns in praise of Sri Vishnu. Their songs are compiled as #DivyaPrabandham containing 4000 verses.
106 #DivyaDesam temples one can visit in this life are located in TN (85), Kerala (11) Uttar Pradesh (4) Uttarakhand (3) Andhra (2) Gujarat (1) and Muktinath in Nepal. It is the dream of every Sri Vaishnava to visit Divya Desams in his/her lifetime. SS via shaktipeethas.org
A #Thread of #lovejihaad cases in the last year. Providing links so that some blabbering secular mor0n doesn’t accuse me of peddling ‘fake news’. These cases are from different parts of India. Have only one thing in common, the victim is a Hindu woman, the kiIIer is a Muslim man!
On 26th October 2020, 21 year old Nikita Tomar was shot dead at a point blank range by Taufeeq outside her college in Faridabad in broad daylight. Nikeeta had lodged a complaint of molestation and stalking against Taufeeq a few weeks ago.
On 17th October 2020, K. Radhika is kiIIed by ‘boyfriend’ Syed Mustafa and his brother Jameel in Hyderabad, Telengana. They use a butcher’s knife to slit her throat.
#thread My children helped in the making of the #9Days9Weaves videos. While shooting the clips, my daughter asked, ‘there are many people in India who deserve and need help, why have you chosen weavers?’ Her question had me thinking.
Handloom textiles are our original #makeinindia craft. Our ancestors had mastered the art is cultivating cotton and flax, spinning yarn, colouring yarn using vegetable n mineral colours using mordants to fix the dye and the craft of weaving on a loom.
Weaving has survived in India despite so many foreign invasions, brutal colonial rules and economic suppression. Under Hindu rulers, weavers enjoyed the status of an artist. They had their own guilds or श्रेणी and even the King had to treat weavers guilds with due respect.
