Open Letter on behalf of the Edmonton Independent Hospitality Community
"We are calling on all levels of government to adopt a Covid Zero plan. This will stop the cycle of bleed & bandage, and focus on a long term solution for real economic recovery.
"Our goal is and always has been for hospitality operators to get back to a point where we can meaningfully contribute to rebuilding the economy.
2/
"Adopting a Covid Zero strategy has worked to drastically reduce and in some cases eliminate Covid in other jurisdictions such as South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, New Zealand, Australia and even here in the Atlantic provinces of Canada.
3/
"With the arrival and spread of the B117 variant in Alberta, we ned leadership to show courage by taking the necessary steps to get the virus under control and out of our communities once and for all.
4/
"The longer we try to operate under the falsehood that we are saving livelihoods and lives we will lose more lives, more businesses and more livelihoods.
"The platitudes ring especially hollow for the hospitality industry.
5/
"The Alberta Government has severely impeded our ability to generate meaningful revenue to sustain our businesses with ill thought out public health orders instead of taking comprehensive action to support business closures and other Covid suppression measures.
6/
"With eight more months to go before we hit our target of everyone who wants a vaccine in Canada getting one, we need action on Covid Zero now. We have seen that a Covid zero strategy can work to suppress the virus and drive economic recovery.
7/
"We are appealing to all levels of government to exercise extraordinary measures to stop this current cycle of half measures and have the courage to go for zero. Let’s finally suppress Covid in our communities so we can move ahead ..for business, economy and public health.
8/
"What we are asking for effective immediately is:
-Implementation of a Covid Zero Plan
-Federal rend and wage subsidy programs to continue for the entirely fo this crisis
-Provincial government top up funding for fixed expenses for the entirely of the crisis.
9/
-Commercial eviction ban reinstated
-Collect and release to the public, hospitality job specific data about Covid-19 infections
10/
"The lack of meaningful government intervention to curb the spread of COVID-19 including appropriate support to help businesses remain closed has prolonged this crisis and destroyed many lives and livelihoods.

We’re waiting. Waiting for the leadership that will allow us to live our lives again.
We have been living with COVID for so long, it often feels like we have forgotten how to live without it.

Imagine hugging friends again, traveling freely, starting large bar tabs, dancing, going to the theatre and to concerts. Imagine all schools, universities, family events, and sports games happening without restrictions.

Despite the fact that most of the world’s best scientists today are working in America, despite the fact that America has produced most of the vaccines for COVID-19 so far, despite that, a long period of risk, restrictions, and uncertainty stretches before us across 2021.

Laos reports continued success in their Zero Covid strategy, with a total of 45 cases since the beginning of the pandemic and only one case in the last two weeks.
Part of their success is due to having strict travel restrictions, with 14-day quarantines upon arrival.
Yesterday Djibouti reported 9 new cases, 0 deaths, and 361 tests. They have reported ~6k cases and 63 total covid deaths to date, with only 2 deaths since the start of this year.
Many states are reporting significant progress in US. Daily cases and hospitalizations are extremely high, but falling quickly. Deaths are relatively constant at 3,000 per day.
Singapore continues to report effective control: today 20 imported quarantined cases and 2 community cases. No covid deaths since November 2020. Congrats!
Denmark has reported significant progress since December, cases are down by ~10X from peak.
However, progress in the last 10 days has come to a halt, with daily cases leveling off around 400.
New York State reports some progress, with new cases decreasing by over 30%, hospitalizations and deaths just starting to decrease.
Also, 9% of New Yorkers received at least one vaccine dose.
Cases in South Africa have decreased significantly since mid-January. They are now reporting less than ⅕ of their peak! Enough for them to transition from our “Needs Action” category to “Nearly There”. Congrats!
"The question is: what would you do in order to figure out what to do?..Maybe you would..try to pull on the hood or pull on the doors. Maybe you'd get a door open. But you probably might end up in the backseat just like you might end up in the front seat.

"The purpose of complexity science, as I understand it, is to figure out what are the control variables in a problem. So if you knew that the steering wheel and the brakes and gas and the gearshift were the things that you need to control..you would know how to drive a car.
