I’m worried about Texas COVID—

“We could all huddle in one house” was Heidi Cruz’s first suggestion to stay warm with her neighbors when power went out. I know shared heat is nice & neighborly, but I think it will likely trigger more #COVID19 outbreaks.

2) I tried not to say this quiet thought aloud but I’m seeing and hearing other people worry too. Yes there is a humanitarian crisis and yes hypothermia kills, but we can still be worried about COVID too.
3) I have no pity for Heidi Cruz. But this isn’t about just her. This is about public health.
4) there are a variety of homeless shelters and warming centers in Texas for people who have lost power. I support hypothermia prevention, but we need to whisper the COVID concerns a little too. We know others are huddling with neighbors—worries me. google.com/amp/s/www.texa…
5) for the record, I grew up in my early childhood in homes with zero heat or fireplace in the winter. Cold winter memories are in my bones. And then I moved to South Dakota. I know cold can kill. But so can Covid. We can be worried about both. Stay safe.

Excess mortality in the US is even higher.

2) US total excess mortality from the pandemic is meanwhile approaching almost 600,000 soon... sobering.
3) Meanwhile US has lost a full year of life expectancy in the first half of 2020 alone. 2.7 years of life lost for black Americans. 1.9 years lost for Hispanic Americans. 0.8 lost for whites.

MASK WEARING IN SCHOOLS—New CDC survey of middle & high school students of fellow students mask wearing—

📌60-65% of students reported fellow students wore a mask “all the time” in classrooms, hallways or stairwells.

2) But mask wearing drops a lot when:

📌cafeteria (when not eating) (36%)

📌sports or extracurricular activities (28%)

3) These numbers are quite low. Shockingly low. Granted a lot of these 3,953 middle and high school students with in person classes are schools in states with looser or no mask mandates. But I’m most worried about mask wearing with such mediocre to low prevalence.
