MASK WEARING IN SCHOOLS—New CDC survey of middle & high school students of fellow students mask wearing—

📌60-65% of students reported fellow students wore a mask “all the time” in classrooms, hallways or stairwells.

2) But mask wearing drops a lot when:

📌cafeteria (when not eating) (36%)

📌sports or extracurricular activities (28%)

3) These numbers are quite low. Shockingly low. Granted a lot of these 3,953 middle and high school students with in person classes are schools in states with looser or no mask mandates. But I’m most worried about mask wearing with such mediocre to low prevalence.

4) I believe these low numbers. And I expect some schools to have even lower—especially in more conservative states.

5) We need better mask enforcement for sure, but we need ventilation and air cleaning just as much as masks. Good air exchange is more effective since it doesn’t rely on student compliance and better for school lunches that are unmasked. Here is my long ventilation 🧵 below.
