Sobering NYT cover tomorrow—almost 500,000 confirmed deaths from #COVID19 in the US.

Excess mortality in the US is even higher.

Don’t look away. Pandemic is not over. Be vigilant. #doublemask
2) US total excess mortality from the pandemic is meanwhile approaching almost 600,000 soon... sobering.
3) Meanwhile US has lost a full year of life expectancy in the first half of 2020 alone. 2.7 years of life lost for black Americans. 1.9 years lost for Hispanic Americans. 0.8 lost for whites.

Let that sink in.
4) Much why we are here have been due to mask denialism and pandemic denialism and now anti vaccine attitudes. It’s killing us. (This below is a parody but it’s spot on).
5) Please double mask. Here is why.
6) notably, While both people wearing masks is best (green circle), if only one person out of 2 wears a mask, the double mask (of surgical plus cloth) seems superior to single surgical that is knotted & tucked.

All else equal—do both. But if just do one, DOUBLE MASK.
7) if you wear just one surgical mask, make sure you knot the sides to ensure tight fit.
8) Sadly, a lot of people and even kids in schools are not masking enough. Latest CDC study—
9) the new #B117 is just too contagious. Switch to premium mask. Especially if others around you don’t mask.
10) B117 is highly infectious. Example in Denmark, where B117 is growing exponentially. And so are outbreaks despite lockdown.
11) And the more infectious #B117 variant is growing fast in the US especially in Florida. Yes, Florida, where it will be dominant by mid March.
12) Despite overall cases dropping, why aren’t we out of the woods of this pandemic? Because the pandemic is diverging into two! See thread 🧵
13) Here is what is going to happen... currently R is ~0.9 in many places, but with the more infectious #B117, the R will jump 50% approximately. And it is inevitable (all CDC and Danish models say this) that B117 will take over as the reigning dominant variant soon...
14) “there is no fate but what we make” ~Terminator 2.

The future is not set in stone. The choice is ours.

Let’s not make the same mistake twice. The pandemic will not be over by April (I don’t care what that dumb WSJ oped said). Stay focused. nymag.com/intelligencer/…
15) Let this figure on drop in US life expectancy get etched into our memories of this pandemic when we hunt down the culprits of it someday when this is all over:

📌Black male: -3 years!

📌Hispanic male: -2.4 years!

And this is only for half of 2020!

This bothers me so much—

📍There are still no official CDC guidelines for ventilation for schools—no rules on adequate air exchanges—despite so much science on >=5 ACH/hour.

📍And 6 feet is not safe for airborne virus, says ex-OSHA chief. #COVID19 🧵 nj.com/opinion/2021/0… Image
2) “We’ve known for nearly a year that COVID is airborne – yet aside from hospitals, few workplaces acknowledge that the virus can hang in the air. Instead, they emphasize surface-scrubbing and physical distancing”
3) We need at 5 or more air exchanges per hour says @HarvardChanSPH researchers, either via natural ventilation or air cleaning. Image

I think Texas needs new leaders... First Ted Cruz and now...

Texas’s Attorney General Ken Paxton and wife TX Senator Angela Paxton both fled to Utah during #TexasBlackout to avoid the freezing cold and water outage while their voters suffered.

2) Texas’s elected leaders directly control @ERCOT_ISO — and the deregulation and lack of safety investments that led to Texas’s electricity ⚡️ crisis and humanitarian crisis.
3) The breathtaking callousness of Texas leaders is quite something to behold. It is bottomless.

COVID hidden in lung 🫁 transplant—transplant recipient tragically dies after receiving donor lungs, unbeknownst infected with #COVID19. The surgeon also contracted same #SARSCoV2—both infected from the dead donor’s lung, verified from genetic sequencing.🧵nbcnews.com/health/health-…
2) “Doctors say a woman in Michigan contracted Covid-19 and died last fall two months after receiving a tainted double-lung transplant from a donor who turned out to harbor the virus that causes the disease — despite showing no signs of illness and initially testing negative.”
3) “Officials at the University of Michigan Medical School suggested it may be the first proven case of #COVID19 in U.S. in which virus was transmitted via an organ transplant. A surgeon who handled the donor lungs was also infected with the virus & fell ill but later recovered.”

AIR DISINFECTION—To reduce airborne #SARSCoV2 risk, new study finds HEPA cleaners, with total air exchange rate of 5.7  ACH/hour, after 2 hours in closed room with a highly infective person—the inhaled dose is 6x reduced!

➡️We need these for schools.🧵

2) In times when classes were conducted with windows and door closed, the aerosol concentration was reduced by more than 90% within less than 30 minutes when running the purifiers (air exchange rate 5.5 /hour)—and decreased by more than 95% within 37 minutes. Image
3) A **halving of the particle concentration was reached in 10.0, 7.0 or 5.4 minutes** (green, black and red lines, respectively), depending on the total flow of the purifiers.

The blue line shows a typical slow decrease when no purifiers were used. Image
