Highlighting a couple of improvements from United's Europa league R32 win over La Real. #MUFC
La Real 0 v 4 Man Utd — Buildup & Pressing. #RSOMUN
Pressing & traps:
Often #mufc are hasty & over-commit in their pressing, especially from players like Rashford and Bruno. Thus leading their press to be dis-jointed and by-passed easily. On Thursday, they nailed it. They formed a pressing cage around #RSO entire midfield.
Aim was to minimize #RSO creative players' involvement on the ball. In fact, Merino & Silva had the fewest touches of their teammates. Bruno & MG11 focused on cutting passing lanes to midfield instead of rushing the press. MG11 pressed nearside CB when ball went out-wide.
The trigger for United's press was when the ball is played to the FBs. This is where a ball nearside Winger pressed the FB, while the CF closes the ball nearside CB & the CM (Scott) & FB (AWB) pressed the dropping CM (Merino) & LW (Oyarzabal).+CB pressed dropping CF (Izak). #mufc
Buildup:
#MUFC built-up in a 2422 where the CF & CAM dropped to help the buildup. #RSO pressed in 4132 with Silva pushing up. Th improvement was how Fred and Scott communicated & opened up angles for their CBs to cut through the press.+ Bruno dragging Illarramendi OOP.
This allowed Fernandes opened angles for Fred who was excellent on the night in scanning his positioning to get out of press.
Just like the pressing can be dis-joined if the backline doesn't push up, the buildup can also be dis-jointed with no angles to get out of press. #MUFC
MG11 and Fernandes dropping while MR10 shifting to CF to pin the CBs was very clever and helped #mufd by-pass #RSO press often. Notice Greenwood's position and he was the CF on the night...
#MUFC maintained their final phase shape, which was 325/235. It was fluid, however, as on the transition it was a 424. The change was Bruno maintained as high a position as Greenwood. He was a second striker. Bruno becomes less effective the deeper he drops...
Since #RSO don't really defend in a low block, he was not needed to drop to progress the ball often & it was a smart thing to be that high. A valuable quality Bruno has he makes a lot of striker-like runs off the shoulder of defenders. It was evident in his 2 goals.
Man Utd 3 v 2 Liverpool — Tactics #MUFC
----------------------------------------------------------
In this thread, we'll look at couple of the highlights and tactical tweaks both teams used to attack each other. We'll look at Man Utd's mistakes that lead to the goals as well. #MUFC
Right from the off, Liverpool looked to hurt United with quick switches of play to catch out their out of possession 442 setup. A quick switched ball from Robertson to TAA catches Rashford, Shaw and Maguire OOP & force them to adjust quickly. Rashford is vital here for TAA's run.
OGS: "Play on our terms. Different systems to nullify opponents. To win [v Liverpool] with the way we see our team. That's a statement to ourselves. A confidence boost. We can match the best with our style of football."
One of the best PostMatch Conferences from Solskjær. #MUFC
I've said it before v the "top 6" [mainly Chelsea, City & Liverpool] in 19/20, OGS was mainly focused on nullifying these teams strengths and hit them on the counter. We could match any of them toe-to-toe. Counter-attacking is the Achilles heel for said that dominate possession.
Now that United have PP (injury free), Bruno (From the start), Cavani, Donny, AM9 & MR10 all available, OGS wants to assert authority & play v top 6 with our terms. Let them worry about us. The success rate decreased but It gives you an indication of how far off are you. #MUFC
Much has been made of the wins against Burnley, Wolves, Fulham as United are winning games narrowly with "Individual Brilliance". They are not dominating games. "Scrappy wins", if you will, and said this form will not be sustainable. #MUFC
Let's look at the Fulham game:
United usually buildup in 2 different shapes/patterns: 1. 244(424) or
One paper, it looked like United lined up in a 4231 however that was not the case on the pitch. OGS always like to use a hybrid of 2-3 formations in the different phases of the game. United in this case used 4-2-2-2 in possession which, in the final phase became a 4-2-4. #MUFC
Pogba was used wide left and Fernandes wide right as a 10 double pivot but the wide forwards. It is difficult to call Martial and Rashford STs in this game as the move wide a lot ( Hybrid Wingers/Wide forwards) & interchanged with Pogan and Fernandes. You'll see below. #MUFC
LEI buildup in 2422. United pressed - High block - them in 4321 with Martial pressing the CBs while Bruno press the CM ball nearside. The wingers pressed the fullback(s) ball nearside. Fred would move out to press the other CM if needed or to cover for a winger. #MUFC
In mid block, United went into their 442 defensive shape. They still pressed the CBs in 4411, where Fernandes pressed the RCB on ball and Martial covered the LCM as One W pressed the FB and the other covers the RCM.
#MUFC buildup from the back only when possible in 2422 while #LUFC tried to press 4141. #MUFC anticipated high-intensity press, so at GKs #mufc setup positions as to play short but DDG instead went long, forcing #LUFC to apply their press over a significantly increased area...
, and ensuring that the 1st & 2nd contacts came near the halfway line. The larger spaces that existed, the bigger the space that is freed up for AM9, MR10 and DJ21 to attack their opponents 1v1. #MUFC
