Okay, here we go. As you know, the #MagicPorch is better than the TARDIS. Magic stuff shows up and it's always a delight.
But TODAY. Holy MOLEY.
It's not games, for once, also, as well, too!
1/
Here's what happened. I was on Twitter (which I almost never am, as you know), and I saw someone had made and posted photos of this beautiful replica sign. It was freaky gorgeous.
And I said something clever like, 'buh?' because it was so perfect.
2/
And the account was from a couple who are cosplayers and craftspeople/artists, who make amazing replicas from games and other sources, so perfect you want to die.
But this PARTICULAR piece was just a whole level beyond, for me because...
3/
It's based on a vintage, classic Disney World ride.
Now, some of you already know my ridiculous obsession with yester-attractions from the Disney parks. I have a wall of books about this exact topic. It's absurd but it brings me so much joy.
4/
So, the lady of the account, (her name is Jennifer, his is Nathan), IMMEDIATELY said, "Oh, send us your address and we'll make you one!"
WHAT.
5/
And here is where I admit I am weak because I couldn't say no...I asked "ARE YOU SURE" a bunch of times, but she said she would LOVE to make one for me, it would mean a lot to her. So I asked why.
6/
It turns out that she had been in a bad car accident. And recovery had taken three long years and there had been two illnesses at the same time, serious ones.
But her favorite hero as a kid was Barbara Gordon.
7/
And she said that my writing helped her through those rough times. Seeing Barbara still kick ass though she wasn't the same physically, as Oracle, helped her 'not give up.'
Sorry, crying a little bit.
8/
So these are the lovely Jennifer and Nathan, who did this incredibly kind thing for a stranger...
And they make replicas of cool stuff and video game props and digital cosplay planners and you should check it out because their house looks like Guillermo Del Toro or something it's so cool.
10/
Wanna see what they sent?
AUGH, I'm freaking out a little.
11/
All right, first, large box is large. You could fit a people in it. Or even more than one people if they scrunch! We could barely get it in the car...
12/
It is packed like Santa loves us.
It arrived pristine and perfect!
13/
Prepare for the awesome.
Disney fans, old movie fans, you are gonna be jelly. :)
I DON'T BLAME YOU.
14/
Look! Oh my god!
20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA. One of my all-time favorite movies, and the BEST classic ride!
I cursed like a sailor when I opened the package! JOY.
15/
The detail work is just god-tier...
Look!
16/
And here is the amazing thing, it comes with a remote, and it has different lighting effects...oh my lord!
17/
It's a whale of a tale, I'll tell ye, lads,
A whale of a tale or two!
I LOVE THIS MOVIE AND THIS RIDE SO MUCH.
Okay, but that's not all. When they heard that @RocketSpouse loves the ride, too...
18/
So basically, this is why I want to be a gooder person because there are so many lovely people and so much kindness in the world. Just makes everything happier.
Now, when I am working, just a glance up will remind me of all of that.
20/
So, thank you, thank you, Jennifer and Nathan at @NoSleepCosplay. You have no idea how much joy this has brought us during this time when we can’t get to the parks.
ALL THE ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️!
Folks, please give them a follow, they are joy-bringers!
21/
And PLEASE check out their Etsy store, you won't regret it, it's full of this kind of wonder. :)
Hello, again! As many of you know, I have been delving deep into tabletop games, mostly for fun, but also because I genuinely believe that during quarantine, they can have a positive effect on people. And the community has been lovely and I am grateful. However...
1/
I want to share this enthusiasm with others, and it seems to be going very well, except for a lot of nice folks who would love to jump in, but for two reasons;
1) They don't have anyone to play games with and
2) Cost
2/
Now, it turns out that the game community is aware of these and we did a big thread about games you can play solo or online easily, with some great suggestions.
So now I want to talk a little bit about cost. Gaming CAN be super expensive. But it doesn't have to be!
3/
As many of you know, I asked for suggestions for board games a couple weeks back and roughly a billion games got sent to my house. HUZZAH! We are playing one new game a day and then I talk about them here with you nerds!
1/
Okay, I am slightly behind so today I am going to briefly cover TWO games we have tried, and cool fact: they are two of the MOST requested games for us to try of the entire Peninsula O’ Games that has come to my door. What are they, you ask?
2/
So, since I started collecting vinyl, I have a couple things I am always looking out for.
Yesterday I found a nice antique/gift shop that had a great selection of stuff in the categories I like, so I got a few and here they are from least weird to most.
1/
The first category is underrated albums by famous musicians.
Albums that never got the respect they deserved.
This is Pete’s second best album, no one talks about it. Incredible songwriting, feels more punk than actual punk at times. Title song is incredible.
2/
Second underrated record is this...Linda Ronstadt’s much mocked attempt at ‘new wave’ music, savaged by the critics.
Except, it’s actually great, featuring songwriting by the creative mind behind the Cretones and others. Angry Linda upset critics, somehow. Surprise.
You know what I don’t miss? Parent teacher conferences.
Most of Rocketkid’s teachers were lovely, but we had two that still stick out in my mind as sad/hilarious.
The first one, he was in elementary school. The teacher said it was ‘important’ for us to come in.
1/
So we worried about that for two days until the meeting. What could be wrong? It’s scary for parents to be left hanging like that.
So we meet his teacher, goatee and sunglasses...we live in the boonies and yet there’s something here like he’s trying to be a player.
2/
Not like a lady-player, like he’s got an image of himself in his head. We like teachers, but this guy’s manner is just weirdly kind of pushy a little bit.
Anyway, we sit does in the kid chairs, he’s behind his desk, again, weirdly focused on ‘power,’ somehow.
