As many of you know, I asked for suggestions for board games a couple weeks back and roughly a billion games got sent to my house. HUZZAH! We are playing one new game a day and then I talk about them here with you nerds!
1/
Okay, I am slightly behind so today I am going to briefly cover TWO games we have tried, and cool fact: they are two of the MOST requested games for us to try of the entire Peninsula O’ Games that has come to my door. What are they, you ask?
2/
Gonna start with FIREBALL ISLAND. Now, here’s the embarrassing thing. We were having so much fun setting it up and playing it, we barely took any pictures at all, so most of these are not from our session. But this game is just a RIOT of silly fun.
4/
What @RestorationGame does is, they take beloved but long deceased games, fix them up and improve and modernize them, and put them out in stunning new versions with top notch design and art and components. FIREBALL ISLAND is gorgeous now.
This is the basic set...HUGE.
5/
And this is the game with a few expansions! We played the basic set to start.
The idea is, you fly in to the island by helicopter, try to find gems and take photos, without upsetting the island’s angry god.
It’s a joy to behold when set up fully. ;)
6/
The game by itself feels like a great fun throwback to playing with your friends as kids, but there is surprisingly a lot of strategy. It plays like a classic treasure hunt/Indiana Jones game, but the best part is, at times...
7/
...marbles are dumped into the angry god’s head at the top of the board, and they roll down completely randomly, often undoing your entire plan.
It’s a dang hoot. :)
We got to where we would DREAD that thing’s wrath!
8/
The components and design and rules are just beautiful...retro and modern at the same time. Even a small group of players like we had, just three people, felt like a party. It’s a great family game, but we all loved it and cursed like sailors.
Just sheer, pure gaming fun!
9/
Those last photos are from our session, a little fuzzy, sorry!
I would recommend this game for almost anyone willing to have a little whimsy and fantasy in their game. It takes a bit to set up for the first time, kids might get impatient, so set it up in advance?
10/
But I cannot describe how viscerally FUN it is to drop the marbles and have your opponent's plans DEMOLISHED.
Again, check out @RestorationGame and restorationgames.com. Everything they do comes from a love of gaming and it shows. Haven't played a SINGLE game from them that was less than excellent.
13/
And before I get to our second #TabletopGails game of the day, just a reminder for legal reasons...these games have been given to me free, all opinions are 100% my own and my family's. And the makers of these games urge you to support your friendly local game store, okay?
14/
All right, this is a game we have been dying to play. It’s one of THE most recommended games by you wonderful gaming nerds out there, and it features one of the most beloved (by me) themes anywhere. It’s HORRIFIED by @RavensburgerNA!
15/
I have wanted to play this since I first saw it. We are HUGE fans of the Universal classic monsters, and the game has been highly recommended. So it's been a goal for a long time.
We just played it this morning!
16/
Every game we have opened from @RavensburgerNA is a delight for the eyes and fingers. The designs are always immaculate, the gameplay original and fun, and the components just FEEL great to hold. HORRIFIED manages to evoke those great black and white movies perfectly.
17/
It’s a co-op game, we played with 3 players, but it can be played solo or with up to 5.
You play heroes, working together to destroy the monsters terrorizing a village. Classic Universal monsters! People paint these, but I love the solid colors.
18/
We came in cold, and I admit we were a bit confused about a couple of the rules at first, but that quickly faded and we all got so involved we actually cheered when we beat the monsters. For beginners, you fight against Dracula and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. :)
19/
Every aspect and component is beautiful, and for a die-hard Universal fan, it’s even more fun, as there are little nods to the films on almost every card...(Abbot and Costello!).
The board is beautiful, and I love this warning on the back when you open the box...
20/
The whole game is entertaining, we played with classic thriller soundtrack music playing in the background, which added a lot of atmosphere.
But the cleverest bit is this...each monster must be defeated differently. It’s imaginative and suspenseful. Awesome.
21/
I have to say...we didn’t just like this game. We LOVED it.
You genuinely become involved, you feel genuine suspense, and a real desire to finish your missions before it’s too late. A remarkable achievement for a board game...we wanted to play again immediately.
22/
Not sure if I can be any clearer.
If you love board games, you want this.
If you love the classic monsters, YOU NEED THIS BAD.
:)
We are going to play tonight, against different monsters.
Look out, Mummy! We're gonna kick your ancient dusty behind!
23/
Can't recommend it enough. You WILL have fun and you might even get some thrills. :)
That's it for #TabletopGails for the day. If you have questions or comments, feel free to leave them here for myself or for the publishers or other players!
Hello, again! As many of you know, I have been delving deep into tabletop games, mostly for fun, but also because I genuinely believe that during quarantine, they can have a positive effect on people. And the community has been lovely and I am grateful. However...
1/
I want to share this enthusiasm with others, and it seems to be going very well, except for a lot of nice folks who would love to jump in, but for two reasons;
1) They don't have anyone to play games with and
2) Cost
2/
Now, it turns out that the game community is aware of these and we did a big thread about games you can play solo or online easily, with some great suggestions.
So now I want to talk a little bit about cost. Gaming CAN be super expensive. But it doesn't have to be!
3/
Okay, here we go. As you know, the #MagicPorch is better than the TARDIS. Magic stuff shows up and it's always a delight.
But TODAY. Holy MOLEY.
It's not games, for once, also, as well, too!
1/
Here's what happened. I was on Twitter (which I almost never am, as you know), and I saw someone had made and posted photos of this beautiful replica sign. It was freaky gorgeous.
And I said something clever like, 'buh?' because it was so perfect.
2/
And the account was from a couple who are cosplayers and craftspeople/artists, who make amazing replicas from games and other sources, so perfect you want to die.
But this PARTICULAR piece was just a whole level beyond, for me because...
3/
So, since I started collecting vinyl, I have a couple things I am always looking out for.
Yesterday I found a nice antique/gift shop that had a great selection of stuff in the categories I like, so I got a few and here they are from least weird to most.
1/
The first category is underrated albums by famous musicians.
Albums that never got the respect they deserved.
This is Pete’s second best album, no one talks about it. Incredible songwriting, feels more punk than actual punk at times. Title song is incredible.
2/
Second underrated record is this...Linda Ronstadt’s much mocked attempt at ‘new wave’ music, savaged by the critics.
Except, it’s actually great, featuring songwriting by the creative mind behind the Cretones and others. Angry Linda upset critics, somehow. Surprise.
You know what I don’t miss? Parent teacher conferences.
Most of Rocketkid’s teachers were lovely, but we had two that still stick out in my mind as sad/hilarious.
The first one, he was in elementary school. The teacher said it was ‘important’ for us to come in.
1/
So we worried about that for two days until the meeting. What could be wrong? It’s scary for parents to be left hanging like that.
So we meet his teacher, goatee and sunglasses...we live in the boonies and yet there’s something here like he’s trying to be a player.
2/
Not like a lady-player, like he’s got an image of himself in his head. We like teachers, but this guy’s manner is just weirdly kind of pushy a little bit.
Anyway, we sit does in the kid chairs, he’s behind his desk, again, weirdly focused on ‘power,’ somehow.
