Frank & I started sharing dereliction in Cork City last June
We really didn’t think that over 8 months later we'd still be posting
It's reached 300 today
Owners of a derelict building have 2 options
1 Sell – it’s a booming housing market
2 Renovate – there are 7 funds available depending on your circumstances & rents have doubled
It is often said that our planning system is not fit for purpose, that its blocking development & causing dereliction.
But did you know that less than 5% of derelict properties have being refused planning?
Whereas 73% of derelict properties with planning permission let it lapse.
It is true that our buildings regulations are challenging but not as much as we are led to believe.
The vast majority of derelict buildings can be brought back into use without needing to meet the same strict standards as new builds. #RestPlayWork#dereliction#10myths#ireland
We have a housing & homeless crisis
We are crippled by excessive mortgages & rents
YET we have a minority speculating at all of our expense
Our Constitution places Social Justice & Common Good above Private Property, so why hasn’t it been enacted?
It can be nigh on impossible to find the owner of a property who wants to stay hidden
But did you know that a property can go on the Derelict Registry without finding the owner, there's 2 such properties registered in Cork City. #RestPlayWork#dereliction#Ireland#10myths
Tax is often seen as the only solution for bad behaviour in Ireland.
But did you know if you own a derelict property you could face up to 2 years in prison & a fine of €55k, this could go up to €12m if it’s a protected structure. #RestPlayWork#dereliction#Ireland#10myths
Cork City Council could raise €2.1m per year on just 95 Derelict properties.
Imagine if they applied levies to all their derelict properties.
Now imagine if they got paid the levy when those places sold, showing neglectful owners they will always pay in the end. #RestPlayWork
Cork City is planning on applying a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) to 17 derelict buildings
Limerick CPO’d 100 derelict buildings in the last 2 years
Louth CPO’d 92 derelict buildings between 2015 – 2018
72% of 340 properties identified are not in Dereliction Register
Only 6% of Dereliction Levies are collected
Only 5% are under CPO
None were given legal obligations to remove dereliction
