Like, offer signed- 2 weeks notice at previous job given. I'd love an explanation, cuz I'm pissed.
This would have been their first job in tech (from a non-tech background). Imagine getting offered a life changing amount of money in an offer, giving your 2 weeks on a Friday, and waking up on email with a revoked offer on Monday.
Anyway, if you're hiring an entry level/jr technical writer/evangelist/dev advocate, shoot me a DM and I'll send it to them. โค๏ธ In the meantime, maybe don't apply to @fast ยฏ\_(ใ)_/ยฏ
Any thoughts here @PeterGrassi1? I've been fuming over this for a week. ๐ค๐ก
This should never be anyone's 1st experience in tech.
Not to mention, no real explanation was given for pulling the offer.
They were so excited for this 1st job in tech. Got to see their face light up when they found out they could leave their high school teaching job & start a new career in tech. Now they're unemployed. Wtf @fast?
Plz stop suggesting they take legal action. As I mentioned, they are now unemployed from a teaching job due to giving 2 weeks, so this is not feasible at this time.
Like imagine learning to code (self taught), applying for jobs, getting this offer, signing it, giving 2 weeks, planning your life, and BOOM.
Thankful they have me/this thread to see reactions cuz if that was my introduction to the tech world? I'd leave FAST, @fast ๐โโ๏ธ๐
In conclusion, actions speak louder than words, @domm.
Best of luck finding your top talent ๐ฎ๐๏ธ๐ฅ๐
Hurting my friend emotionally/financially, only hiring an echo chamber of referrals/top university students, and touting diversity/inclusion efforts that I don't see put into action? I'm good, @fast.
Early in my own career, I had an offer pulled. I was privileged enough to have mentors + a partner to tell me this was a red flag/not my fault.
Imagine folks who don't have that luxury: new to tech, unfamiliar with the landscape of hiring.
Wasn't gonna say anything publicly about this, but when I see folks in tech showboating rOcKsTaR hIrInG practices like this at their company in a long boastful twitter thread, I can't stay silent. ๐๏ธ๐ฎ๐ฅ
I don't think there is really a way for @domm@abarrallen@PeterGrassi1 and @fast to apologize here to my friend (the damage is done, and my friend is now unemployed), but I hope they learn from this and do better in the future.
Please do better going forward.
We talk a lot about diversity + inclusion in terms of gender + race, but touting that you only hire the top talent from universities + top companies? That's pretty exclusionary to self-taught/non-traditional background folks without the luxury of learning of CS early in life.
Please don't pull any more offers, and consider reevaluating your hiring practices to be more inclusive. I'm sure you've seen all your quote RTs thus far @domm, but something about all of this smells rotten here. ๐ฌ
There's not a lot that can be done here. If they were to offer my friend a job at this point, I'm sure they'd decline. ๐
I'd recommend that @fast invest in putting together an apprenticeship program to help support and mentor non-traditional/jr candidates. But this takes time.
But in the meantime, an actual explanation/apology to my friend would be nice. ยฏ\_(ใ)_/ยฏ
Thanks to all who have sent along job opportunities- I will forward them along. โค๏ธ
Imagine hiring someone for a role that specializes in working with the developer community, rescinding their offer, and not thinking this would get out to the developer community somehow. ยฏ\_(ใ)_/ยฏ
Quick note: I have not mentioned my friend + mentee's gender and y'all are saying "she" a lot in the comments.
A friendly reminder that women can mentor men + non-binary folks as well ๐
For historical purposes, I think its important to note that we are in the middle of a global panera. ๐ท
You rescinded an offer from a high school teacher leaving their teaching job during COVID times @domm@PeterGrassi1@abarrallen... this ain't it. Please do better.

International Women's Day is coming up. In lieu of tagging 20+ women in a long Twitter thread, plz consider donating/investing/volunteering with an organization like @TechtonicaOrg@BlackGirlsCode or @blockpartyapp_ โ๏ธ๐ธ๐ฉโ๐ป๐บ๐คธโโ๏ธ๐ it makes a huge difference.
5 years ago I was performing on this stage as a crayon in "The Day the Crayons Quit", and pounding redbull to get my energy high enough to perform 2 morning shows a day for kids ๐ญ๐๏ธ๐ด
If you think it's too late to learn to code/make a career switch, I promise you it's not. ๐ฉโ๐ป๐
Not everyone has the luxury of being exposed to computer science at an early age. There's no shame in learning later in life- we all start somewhere.
If you feel like you don't belong in tech, I assure you, there's space for you (and we need you). ๐โค๏ธ
Imagine calling something "Abundance 360", and it then being a COVID-19 super spreader event... Silicon Valley continues to be a parody of itself. sfgate.com/coronavirus/arโฆ
"I flew to Culver City in a global Panera, paid $30k, and all I got was a life threatening virus" ๐ณ
Y'all the irony of it being called "ABUNDANCE 360".
