🔮 Prediction:

Creator economy companies are in a race to the bottom to take less of a creator's earnings.

This trend is great for creators but has big implications for the companies. 👇
1/ For years, large platforms like YouTube and Twitch have taken 30%+ of a creator's earnings from subs, tips, etc.

They justify this cut because they help creators grow an audience.

2/ Startups that focus on helping creators make money take a much lower cut of creator earnings:

Substack: 10%
Gumroad: 3.5%-8.5%
Buy Me a Coffee: 5%
3/ What's different now is that large platforms are now planning to let creators keep all their earnings.

Specifically, Twitter:

4/ Rather than build tipping natively (and taking a cut), Twitter is letting creators add multiple 3rd party tipping options:

5/ Twitter knows that it doesn't need to take a cut of creator earnings. Instead:

1. Creators keep all their earnings on Twitter vs. other platforms
2. Creators make more content and engage fans on Twitter
3. Fans use Twitter more and see more ads
6/ Any creator company that relies on a percent of creator earnings to make money will feel a squeeze from:

1. Large platforms in a race to the bottom on take rate
2. Top creators being the most at risk to leave the platform due to the take rate model
3. NFTs and social tokens
7/ "Percent of creator earnings" is quickly becoming a low-margin business. Instead, creator companies might explore other monetization channels such as:

1. SaaS monthly fee
2. Lead gen fee

🐰🕳 I went down the crypto rabbit hole the past few months because I'm convinced that it will transform the creator economy.

Here's everything that I've written about crypto, NFTs, and social tokens so far 👇

💎 A step by step guide to NFTs for creators

If you're a creator, you're probably wondering:

What is an NFT?
Why should I care?
Why are fans paying $$$$$ for digital content?
How do I create an NFT?

New post and thread with @NERFWRLD 👇

creatoreconomy.so/p/guide-to-nft…
1/ What is an NFT?

An NFT is a record that shows who owns a unique piece of content.

Creators produce unique content such as images, videos, songs, and essays.

With NFTs, fans can now own your content and directly invest in your success. Image
2/ I already own my content, why do I need NFTs?

You don't really.

Today, middlemen sit between you and your fans to:

1. Take most of your earnings
2. Own your content rights
3. Control how many fans see your content

Just look at artist revenue share in the music industry: Image

📈 Perez Framework for Bitcoin and NFTs

Carlota Perez broke down past technology cycles into 2 phases and 4 steps:

1. Installation phase
a) Irruption
b) Frenzy

2. Deployment phase
c) Synergy
d) Maturity

A quick look at how this framework could apply bitcoin and NFTs 👇
1/ The phases/steps are:

1. Installation phase

a) Irruption: Funding for new tech and infra

b) Frenzy: Speculation leads to asset bubbles.

2. Deployment phase

c) Synergy: Inequality leads to crash + regulation of the financial sector.

d) Maturity: Tech is broadly adopted.
2/ What's interesting is that there has always been a crash between the installation and deployment phases in past tech waves.

Let's look at how this could apply to Bitcoin and NFTs...

Let's have some fun, what's the worst part of a product that you use regularly and otherwise like?

Bonus if you can add a screenshot.

👀 Customer validation

1:1 user interviews
Focus groups
Research decks
A/B tests and metrics

All of the above is good, but there's an effective channel that people often miss:

Online community 👇
1/ An online community lets you involve users in the design process from the very beginning.

You can present ideas, share mock-ups and get feedback before writing a single line of code.
2/ But an online community is not just for talking about your products.

It lets you talk to users about their lives and deeply immerse yourself in their needs and problems.

This way, you might be able to identify pain points that you didn't even think about.

Let's say we build decentralized Twitter - where no single entity can come between you and your audience.

What will we do about the spread of hate speech, misinformation, and personal attacks?
Started thinking about this after listening to @kevinrose on @APompliano's podcast:

In some ways, Reddit is a good case study:

1. Each subreddit has its own rules
2. Reddit also has platform level rules
3. Reddit will step in to ban a community if they feel that #2 is violated (e.g., /r/TheDonald)

With real decentralization, there is no step 2 or 3. 🤔
