Please watch this important video about the abuse Haben has received for speaking up. I'll also list out ways in which people have come at me. Here's the playbook.
1. Every news showing atrocities in Tigray & not solely assigning responsibility to TPLF & only TPLF is #FakeNews.
Mind you thats countless outlets with respected journalistic standards. Nothing can be real. Verified videos, satellite imagery, countless witness testimonies whether they are refugees or victims of rape, or families of those killed, nothing is real. Everything is fake news.
2. People accuse you of speaking up a lot about Tigray and not speaking up about what is happening to Amharas. There are horrible things happening. Most recently 29 ethnic Amharas were massacred in Wollega.
There are also atrocities to other ethnicities not getting enough news coverage. There are probably many I don't know about. Some of my friends told me about what happened to people in Wolayta zone.
Many ethnic Oromos also raise awareness of whats been done to their communities & their relationship to the Ethiopian state & history.
Growing up we never learned about what was done to them in the name of creating the Ethiopian empire.
I don't recall tweeting about this but I have not received a single criticism from people in this camp about not speaking up about atrocities in their communities.
I have also not tweeted about conditions in Eritrea. And Eritreans in this camp haven't accused me...
of saying something about Tigray without saying something about Eritrea. After all, I am ethnically a Tigrayan Eritrean.
In the backdrop of all this, there are other comments accusing me of not talking about "other atrocities." One even said "AllLivesMatter"
As a Black person in the US I certainly don't have a great association with #AllLivesMatter.
If you dare say #TigrayGenocide you must be a TPLF supporter.
Mind you thats the political party responsible for exile & deportation of our families.
We must be their supporters because we're horrified by whats happening to Tegaru civilians. Or we must be falling victim to their misinformation campaign because...
nothing reporting on #TigrayGenocide is real except for state media or other local outlets with specific mandates.
3. People also deny the presence of Eritrean troops let alone the committed atrocities. Many however, had known of this presence moths ago before confirmation...
by news outlets with so much evidence.
OR they go from not acknowledging their presence to outright defending them.
4. When that doesn't work I get messages of being a traitor & threats. Funny enough I've gotten those from accounts that purport to be supporters AND opponents
of the Ethiopian prime minister.
Who knows the ppl behind the accounts tho.
Some Eritreans also try to question my Eritrean identity (same as they're doing to Haben). Mind you there are many in the diaspora who's only understanding of Eritrea is that...
one should never criticize whats done in its name.
Ask them about culture, language, or Eritreans' living conditions...
Either zero knowledge or complete denial just like Tigray. Many of these people kept on tweeting that they were happy Google fired a "junta supporter."
In the end, I have never witnessed something this disturbing in my life time. It is one thing to be silent. It is another to have complete denial, and shame and bully those who are saying something. The level of complete denial by people I thought would never do this is shocking

"As Dr. Mitchell defended Dr. Gebru, the company removed her, too. She had searched through her own Google email account for material that would support their position and forwarded emails to another account, which somehow got her into trouble." shorturl.at/jkBK2
"Google declined to comment for this article."
After they made a statement making @mmitchell_ai sound like a spy of some sort saying she had "exfiltrated" "thousands of documents" that were "business sensitive" & contained people's "sensitive data."
I'm glad no one buys it.
They made that statement a week or so after locking her out & then I KNEW they must have decided to fire her cause one doesn't say that about an employee they haven't decided to fire & smear. Yet they waited 4 more weeks to package it into their string of announcements.
"Here, we detail the intensity and ferocity of this abuse, and demonstrate how it is designed not only to vilify a journalism icon, but to discredit journalism itself, and shatter public trust in facts...."
"These attacks have also created an enabling environment for Ressa’s persecution and prosecution in the Philippines. Now, her life is at risk and she faces the prospect of decades in jail, proving that there is nothing virtual about online violence."
"Despite fledgling attempts to address hate speech within the social media ecosystem, the platforms are the vectors which facilitate these attacks, creating an enabling environment for the State-led legal harassment of Ressa."
@schrep@_KarenHao I would not respond like this to Karen's extensive, well thought out piece. Those of use at the forefront of this field, are not "less motivated" after reading the piece.
The issue is that we have fought hard to convince people in power, such as yourself who...
@schrep@_KarenHao have not faced the very real consequences of misinformation and all other issues that have been fueling all sorts of issues. Most recently, crimes against humanity in Ethiopia. @L_badikho has even been studying this in the Moroccan setting, ON HIS OWN TIME not because its fun...
@schrep@_KarenHao@L_badikho but because his life & the lives of many others are in danger & the shallow understanding of FB executives & lack of will to put required resources, makes it necessary for him to do this. Its impossible to convince those in power of the gravity because they're not the ones dying.
"She responded to Bender that she was trying to get Google to consider the ethical implications of large language models."
Well. Thats how THAT went.
I didn't "exit" "leave" or "depart" tho in so much as I was fired.
"With very few laws regulating AI in the United States, companies and academic institutions often make their own rules about what is and isn't okay when developing increasingly powerful software. "
In a statement, Google said it has hundreds of people working on responsible AI, and has produced more than 200 publications related to building responsible AI in the past year
Thats their MO any time they fire someone, they like to make them look like they are JUST ONE of many
This paper already seems to be making an impact, so its extra disheartening that those who spent so much time contributing to it, and without whom it wouldn't have been what it is, aren't allowed to receive credit for it. Every single author was integral to the paper. 2/5
I just can't believe that this was the result of simply writing this paper. Honestly, just sitting here at a conference watching a talk, and waiting for Q&A and reflecting a tiny bit, I can't believe this was the result months after I first sent Emily this message: 3/5
The damage Jeff Dean has done with his gaslighting email & insinuating we were trying to dox anonymous reviewers in some sort of review process because we're not researchers who can take criticism: 1st Hacker News comment about this NBC article: 1\4 nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news…
"Important to remember where these allegations originate from. Timnit Gebru was fired from Google after threatening to quit unless Google reveled the identities of the reviewers of her paper that was not received well while accusing them of sex/race based discrimination."
