— Reporting your User Research Findings like a Psychologist

#DR2021
A deep understanding of the people we're designing for is integral.

But for our stakeholders the research process can be unclear on how we can to our conclusions.
Some of our artefacts are such hi-fidelity that it can give a misconception about the finality of the research.

How do you take stakeholders who don't have direct access to your research along the journey?
The user research report comes in too many shapes and sizes.

Makes it difficult to:
Easily consume the research
Appraise the quality
Design our own research to build on top of it
Luckily we're not the only discipline to have run into this problem. The field of psychology has been doing this for a very long time and the structure of research is heavily engrained in Styliana's practice from University.
At a high level the structure of a research journal is

Abstract
Introduction
Method
Results
Discussion
Introduction:

It's easy to fall into the trap of getting excited about a problem space or research question
Elements of the introduction:

Start with why
Literature review
Identify a gap
Aim
Hypothesis
You've got to go through the existing body of knowledge to make sure you're not wasting your time!
Method:

Make sure you don't skip over how you actually designed the research!
Elements of the method:

Participants—
Number of participants
Demographic characteristics unique to your study
Eligibility & exclusion criteria

Materials & Measures—
Measures used
Tools used

Procedure—
Step by step procedure
How was data collected
How was the data analysed
Results
Elements of results:

Results presented in order of aims and hypothesis
Descriptive statistics & Inferential statistics (where relevant)
Avoid reflection and interpretation of the meaning of the results
Make sure you don't mislead your stakeholders with bad statistics!
Discussion:

It's important to talk about the limitations or your study so that you can build on it in the future
Elements of the Discussion:
Abstract:

It's the sales pitch for your report to help people decide if they should invest time reading more
Elements of an abstract:
Challenge the idea that "we don't have time" to write up a report — what we actually don't have time for is to waste our time and resources on junk research.

Cutting research corners can give you the feeling of research without actually having a valid study.
Thanks so much Styliana!

A huge part of design research is emersing yourself in the context and understand people's challenges and needs.
The campaign created characters — a helpful grandmother and child super heros to show kids how to use the toilet, wash their hands, and design the solutions with the community.
