Indigenous women make up about 4% of all women in Canada, yet are 20% of the female murder victims.

The numbers are indicative of the lack of value placed on indigenous women’s lives by Canadian society.

These are old stats, it’s a census year. 2021 Canada will conduct its decennial census.

But by no means have indigenous women grown to 1 in 5 women.

Disproportionate murder victims. Just being indigenous & female increases the likelihood of violence.

Is it any wonder the indigenous community has been begging for this issue to be addressed?

Thirty two indigenous women were murdered this year.

Twenty percent of victims are indigenous women.

It’s not safe to be indigenous and female.

But we cannot change who we are. We cannot be any less female or indigenous to protect ourselves.

But Canadians can refuse to accept the devaluation of indigenous women.

Implement some of the MMIWG recommendations already.

We must make the value of indigenous women rise in the eyes of all Canadians.

It’s not acceptable to murder any woman. But stop accepting that indigenous women endure disproportionate violence and murder.

First Nations, Métis and Inuit women’s lives matter.

Please treat indigenous women with respect and dignity.

We need allies and champions to change these statistics.
