'..the India-Pakistan cease-fire marked a milestone in secret talks brokered by the UAE that began months earlier...'

'The next step in the process involves both sides reinstating envoys in New Delhi and Islamabad'

Several clues over the past few months pointed at the UAE’s role. In November, Jaishankar met bin Zayed and the crown prince on a two-day visit to Abu Dhabi, followed by Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi the following month.
Roughly two weeks before the Feb. 25 announcement, the UAE foreign minister held a phone call with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan “wherein they discussed regional and international issues of interest.”
In Washington, State Department spokesman Ned Price dodged a question on what role the U.S. played in bringing the two sides together while urging Pakistan to play a constructive role in Afghanistan, Kashmir and other places.

THREAD

On this #WorldPressFreedomDay, let me bring your attention to #Kashmir: Here the job of journalists has become extremely difficult due to unprecedented level of harassment, intimidation and surveillance by the state.

1/n
Recently, three colleagues — Masrat Zahra, Peerzada Ashiq and Gowhar Geelani — were booked by police, two of them under a draconian anti-terrorism law that could result in imprisonment for up to seven years.
2/n
In September 2018, Asif Sultan (31), the assistant editor of a local magazine, Kashmir Narrator, was booked under same stringent anti-terrorism law and is still in the jail.

He was awarded the Press Freedom Award by American National Press Club in August last year.

THREAD

There has been an unprecedented increase in harassment and intimidation of journalists in #Kashmir.

Isn’t invoking draconian UAPA against two journalists part of the pattern?
