2) 79% efficacy for symptomatic #COVID19 overall—100% efficacy for severe disease is amazing.
Even better - 80% efficacy in elderly. That’s super good that efficacy didn’t drop in the elderly. (In contrast, natural infection’s protection against reinfection plummets in elderly)
3) “This AstraZeneca-led US Phase III trial included two doses administered at a four week interval. Previous trials have shown that an extended interval of up to 12 weeks demonstrated greater efficacy, which was also supported by immunogenicity data...”
4) “This evidence suggests administration of the second dose with an interval longer than four weeks could further increase efficacy and accelerates the number of people who can receive their first dose.”
➡️ this supports earlier UK trial findings that a delayed 2nd dose is okay
5) There is evidence to show that vaccine efficacy of Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine improves with longer time gap between the first and second shots. 10-12 weeks seems to the the sweet spot—although it looks like it goes up longer, the 95% confidence interval gets wider >13 weeks.
6) Here is the full study on the earlier 12 week AstraZeneca booster delay study. Note this is based on UK and South Africa trials, not the new US/Peru/Chile trial out today.
First study focused on long-term neurological symptoms in people not sick enough from #COVID19 to need hospitalization: found that 85% of them experienced >=4 neurological issues like brain fog, headaches, tingling, muscle pain & dizziness. Avg age 43. 🧵 nytimes.com/2021/03/23/hea…
2) “We are seeing people who are really highly, highly functional individuals, used to multitasking all the time and being on top of their game, but, all of a sudden, it’s really a struggle for them,” said Dr. Igor J. Koralnik, chief of neuro-ID and global neurology. #LongCovid
3) “In the study, many experienced symptoms that fluctuated or persisted for months. Most improved over time, but there was wide variation. “Some people after 2 months are 95 percent recovered, while some people after 9 months are only 10 percent recovered,” said Dr. Koralnik.
WOW—25 new cases of #P1 variant suddenly appeared in British Columbia Canada 🇨🇦!! This is the variant from Brazil 🇧🇷 that is utterly decimating the country right now—and had ransacked Manaus 🇧🇷 despite high antibodies levels previously before it hit.
Loud protests erupted across Brazil as COVID-sceptic President Bolsonaro claimed citizens would soon be able to resume “normal lives” despite soaring death toll of 3200+ today.
~1/3 of all #COVID19 deaths worldwide today were in 🇧🇷. 🧵
2) “Bolsonaro, whose anti-science response to coronavirus has drawn international condemnation, made a televised address to the country on Tuesday night, as Brazil suffered by far its heaviest day of losses since the outbreak began last February.”
3) ““What I see before me is a country that attaches no value to the lives of its citizens,” the scientist and broadcaster Átila Iamarino said of his government’s response.
Devastating record of 3251 new #COVID19 deaths in a single 24 hours were recorded in Brazil 🇧🇷 today. This spike is 40% higher than recent 7 day average. Hospitals overwhelmed. Bolsonaro today also quietly installed his 4th health minister in a year. 🧵 cnnbrasil.com.br/saude/2021/03/…
2) Brazil’s population is roughly 2/3 of the US. Thus, if adjusting Brazil’s 3251 deaths today to a US sized population, this would be equivalent to ~4800 deaths if Brazil had US pop.
3) Don’t look away. The world needs to face the reality of the crisis facing the people of Brazil, and the crushing effects of the #P1 variant, which is also now circulating worldwide as well as neighboring countries. This could all be us if we don’t collectively act.
