Lots of unique personalities, but a common bond beyond Roam is community. Learning from each other, helping each other, building on one another.

Some of you are just starting with Roam..... but you should plan to help. Pay it forward!
@beauhaan likens Roam today to the early days of Google. Who knows what is being built here.

@cortexfutura Our graphs are interlinked and the data gets more meaningful as we use it.

@maggied roam is an outliner. It starts with a block. They have siblings & children.
No right or wrong way. Get started, get using it and build. iterate, improve, learn, tear down, rebuild.

Don't worry so much about structure, focus on blocks.

Blocks... its all about the blocks. Build one wall with blocks, reuse a block some where else, or the entire wall.
Time is the tax we pay for learning. But Learning is enjoyable.

DNP tracks time for us, patterns develop as we use it, which allows us to build on what e learned - @DharamKapila

@beauhaan forget about the tool, focus on the writing. Writing reveals what thinking conceals.
@natterstefan asks "did you write as much before roam?" Room explodes into laughter... because no... we are at a new level.

@cortexfutura used another note taking tool for a few years, but in comparison with Roam, he wrote more in Roam one month than in this other tool.
@beauhaan calls all the old way of note taking like a graveyard.

@brandontoner used many good systems, but never got to a point he could really trust one of these systems the way he does with Roam. Now he is a regular journaler and writer.
Time management
@calhistorian he is using GTD, task lists, daily & weekly reviews. He pulls together a daily action list while drinking his coffee.

@brandontoner empties his thoughts, takes notes, and integrates tasks and projects
@maggied How to handle stuff on the go? (Mobile tasks)
Some are using Todoist and scripts to bring data in.
Others are using good apps on their mobile devices and copy them over.

@beauhaan brings up good point - Roam isn't there for some of these things. We will get there.
As you get started, master the basics. It doesn't take it that long. But get the fundamentals down before you move onto more advanced solutions.

@cortexfutura is releasing a "fundamentals" course this Saturday. Dealing with basics.. but doing many things (writing, tasks)
Working with large databases:
@calhistorian has a large DB, uses it heavily every day & all day. Has good hardware, but not experiencing issues.

@cortexfutura wisdom: Don't worry about it. Use it! You are a long ways away from experiencing an issue.
Question: is Roam responsive?
@beauhaan don't forget to we are in a pandemic. Challenges to solving certain thing. But when things are important they implement it because community nudges them, helps them design it. Community helps in define roadmap.
@DharamKapila They are helping developers build solutions. Developers can build way more, but need tools and services to make this happen.

@brandontoner "non technical user" loves the extensibility. In effect, Roam is small team with army of community developers backing them.
@DharamKapila Not just a tool for thought, but a tool for building (building solutions to your unique problems).

Wisdom..... absorb this.
Import data from other systems?
@maggied @calhistorian recommends porting data as it is needed so you can adapt it to be useful in Roam. But you don't need to import everything & probably shouldn't. Don't dig a new graveyard, be intentional about what you import & why you need it
@JessicaShieh -- rising Roam star asks about Privacy & confidential information.

Basically this is an area where there is room for growth. Its a a complicated problem to solve & probably not 1 right answer. So caution is needed, because its early for Roam. But we will get there
@GeorgeSilverman talks about roam as a mind processor. Love the way this guy things. Recommends checking out . Also says roam is going to help us deal with our emotions.

@beauhaan adds that the key is we have a trusted place to put our thoughts.
@JessicaShieh - Roam has a harder onboarding because it is like adding more memory and processor, and it just takes time, but we are expanding our mental processing power. (Jessica.. sorry if I slaughtered that). But good thoughts.
@GeorgeSilverman says that AI is the most exciting and scary thing he has seen. But believes Roam can help make AI manageable.

1/11 Spaced Repetition (SR) is amazing for learning. With it, I learned 2nd language. I wish I had this article by @andy_matuschak when I started. His article: [How to write good prompts: using spaced repetition to create understanding](andymatuschak.org/prompts/) #roam
2/11 Advice from real world experience. I admit, earlier I would have been too stubborn to listen. I am ready now & advice came just in time. Thanks Andy! We may not be friends in real life, but I hope to be twitter pals when you start to use @roamresearch (It's going to happen)
3/11 Let me share some of my highlights and personal takeaways. PLUS: please share your advice with me of lessons learned from your own experience with SR.

So Andy's article is a long read, but well worth it. I recommend reading it a few times spaced over time.

1/ @Conaw really liking new CSS work you are all doing & we appreciate whenever UID's are included in HTML stream. The page UID is often included. Would be nice to get UID when HTML renders for:
+ block refs
+ attributes
+ #tags
+ and bonus, but not crucial Alias
#roamosphere
2/ Page UID's in the HTML. Well done team @RoamResearch
3/ Tagged element with hash # but no UID

1/ @RoamResearch has silently pushed out a new feature called Command Palette (get to it through CMD+P or CTRL+P).

However the big news is the AUTOMATIC BACKUP feature (AMEN, an angel gets its wings today)
#roamcult
2/ This is what the schedule backup feature looks like. You can configure the backup directory and backup frequency.

Note this screen is a little confusing, it serves two purposes. Upper area is for "export all" which we had before.

Lower half is for scheduling EDN backup.
3/ As I covered in this tweet thread, EDN is ideal for full database restore. I often backup MD because it's convenient for getting to individual files. But EDN backup is what is really important for your personal graph databas disaster recovery strategy

1/ What is a block in Roam? It is a chunk of text, right? This is true. What is a paragraph in a Word document? A chunk of text, right? What is the difference? A very important and BIG difference. In Word, you identify a paragraph by its location ... #roamcult
2/ What is the "Address" of a paragraph in Word? The address is its location in the document, which is very FRAGILE. Imagine a paragraph address of "page 5, chunk of text 2". If you add content above, its "address" changes.
3/ Because the address changes with text flow, the "address" of the paragraph is very fragile. Thus it is impossible to maintain reliable linkage in or between documents.

1/ Yesterday on @clubhouse, we were talking about the importance of going back to basics even if we have been using @RoamResearch for some time. #roamcult

We discussed in depth the importance of the "OUTLINE"

Roam is an Outliner - a powerful tool that we may underappreciate.
2/ An outliner is a tool that allows you to structure your thoughts into a tree like structure. Each discrete section is a node (bullet), and they are arranged into topic-subtopics (parent-child) relationships. You learned outlining in school and probably don't realize it.
3/ Why is outlining so valuable. Its a simple way, almost working subconsciously, for adding structure & meaning to our notes. This is done through indenting and unindenting text at each bullet (node) level. This structure creates advanced relationships within our notes.

1/5 If you use LIVE PREVIEW or DAILY NOTES POPUP feature of Roam42, you will want to read this thread. I am making an important change to the Roam42 behavior. These features will be DISABLED by default. So if you want to use them, you just need to turn them on. #roamcult #roam42
2/5 To enable DAILY NOTES POPUP, simply add the following text to a block anywhere in your graph database and refresh the browser:

#42Setting DailyNotePopup on

3/5 If you use LIVE PREVIEW feature of Roam42, just add the following text to any block in your graph database to enable the feature and refresh your browser:

#42Setting LivePreview on
