Really good to hear Cameron Dick (ALP) putting it all on men, it being a men's problem, a problem for men to fix, for men to demand better of other men.
David Janetzki (LNP) talking about #EnoughIsEnough talking about true cry for national action.
Shannon Fentiman (ALP) thanking women who came out to #March4Justice hearing & believing, angry about lack of respect for women by our Leaders. Mentions 'Women's Safety & Justice Taskforce'.
Grace Grace (ALP) Talking about timing and numbers. Timing is perfect. Tens of thousands marched to say #EnoughIsEnough and honoured to stand with them. Disturbing accounts hidden away, coming out, all have stories.
Christian Rowan (LNP) also supporting motion, mention men & woman marching. Acknowledging women in Parliament sharing their stories (both sides). Talks about leading by example.
Yvette D'Ath (ALP) one of the women who shared their stories recently to encourage others to speak up. Wants to talk about harassment online when women share their stories. Some terrible responses UGH!
This 🧵 is the "Women" motion in Queensland Parliament and really good example of Parliament truly being #BeyondPolitics - why I am using that hashtag for the thread - you can watch here: tv.parliament.qld.gov.au/?reference=0Mb…
Amanda Camm (LNP) congratulating all the women in Qld Parliament (both sides) who have shared their stories and how she even held back. Acknowledges Brittany Higgins & Grace Tame. And acknowledges men who have been stood up & supported.
Meaghan Scanlon (ALP) Gutful of how women are treated in this country. (As Youth Minister) Everyday young women being victims of sexual assault. Acknowledges women who have not been able to come forward, for many many reasons.
Dale Last (LNP) Every male has to look upon their actions and words. Males must apply test to other men. #March4Justice will go down in history and he says #EnoughIsEnough acknowledges he can't comprehend the discrimination of women as is a man.
Dr Steven Miles (ALP) Distressed to read about experience of his colleagues, bravery, for every story told there are hundreds not told. Change has to start at the top. Respect@Work should have been enacted & PM should have fronted #March4Justice.
Tim Nicholls (LNP) thinks many men have been shocked by behaviour that is unacceptable expressed in the last month. Reflected on his own time as student, young lawyer etc., and now sees are not the way things should have been.
As an aside. I do like how so many of the men in Qld Parliament are not just calling for men to get their shit together but are pointing out that life is better for everyone if women are treated with equality.
Mark Furner (ALP) Women should not be asking for respect, should not be in Parliament moving a motion for women, should not be required and talks about being a Union rep back in the day & women harassed - yuck stories UGH!
Amy MacMahon (GRN) proud to join #March4Justice last week. No reason why women should go without housing, access childcare, healthcare, services etc. in a wealthy state like Queensland. Women over 50 fastest growing homeless in country.
FYI Amy MacMahon is the first Qld MP to acknowledge First Nations women - as in respecting them - and how they are on the front lines of all the problems she listed are worse for them. Need urgent reform👏🏼
Mark Baily (ALP) Rattles off the women who have been Leaders in his lifetime, yet still so many instances of sexual violence against women & rape. Too many perpetrators in our community - men who damage others. It is criminal, it is not masculine.
Steve Minnikin (LNP) excellent start and bonus points from me for including 'non-binary' when acknowledging women. Shares story of a friend "Lauren" calls a "survivor" not victim of rape (horrific story). This 'culture' has to stop now!
Jim McDonald (LNP) Critically important that stories not just be heard but must be believed. Time to face facts we have a system that enables perpetrators. 97% of offenses in Queensland committed by men. "We (men) are all part of the problem".
When I have finished listening to all the speeches - as it does give more 'vibe' listening, than just reading transcript - I will go back through and attach the screenshot of each MPs speech to the tweet related to them.
Melissa McMahon (ALP) proud of every who marched in #March4Justice and goes on to PM and she is pretty dirty about his words & actions since. Applauds courage of women who have spoken up. Asked if "Dyke or Bike" by Police colleagues 🤬
Ann Leahy (LNP) Mentions women who don't get their names in the paper but local women who try to make a difference. Rattles off clubs in her electorate like Zonta who speak up & try to improve outlook for women.
Jonty Bush (ALP) proud to be part of a government that has led government in tackling issues with women "Not Now Not Ever" and "Women's Safety & Justice Taskforce". Another that is really angry at PM.
Laura Gerber (LNP) Sexual violence is never OK. Wants to give a voice to women who felt that they could not share their story. You are survivors of sexual violence and this is what this motion is all about. Now is the time for change & action.
Ali King (ALP) Rattles off crap seen just this last few months with federal parliament. Sick of hearing about men 'being shocked'. Another who is really sick of the PM. Do not say this is above politics, lists policies that hurt women.
Pat Weir (LNP) Message has been heard loudly and clearly by all of us. Talks about mother. No-one should feel vulnerable, we should all feel safe, more so for women. Women need to be equal to male counterparts.
Scott Stewart (ALP) not just in Brisbane did they march. He stands with those calling for change. It is upon ALL women and men to stand up and affect cultural change and not allow this behaviour to happen.
Michael Berkman (GRN) Privilege to attend #March4Justice and acknowledges all that marched and particularly those who organised, more free women's labour. Painful & unacceptably slow it is taking to dismantle patriarchy that needs to be disrupted.
Good to see Berkman being a 'good ally' and acknowledging 'privilege' and men don't deserve a medal for calling out rape culture.
Hear hear 👏🏼
Jess Pugh (ALP) Moved to tears holding baby girl at rally last week. Feels men are beginning to comprehend what women have experienced. Men have never asked the questions before. Men need to speak up & say it is "not OK" when they see/hear it.
Jess Pugh slams the quota comments. Accused of it herself, only having a job coz of quota and she slays that line. 👍🏼
Tom Smith (ALP) Calling out men who view women as a possession to be owned, or another notch on the belt. Cannot overlook that women in this house (both sides) face a greater level of toxicity than the men in this house.
Joan Pease (ALP) Stated as office junior in 1976 with boss who likes to smack younger women on the arse. What a start 😳 Relates daughter phoning her and issues with reporting assault. 40 years on, nothing has changed.
*heartbreaking* 😢
Joe Kelly (ALP) Talking about how he grew up in Toxic, sexist, homophobic society, would like to say called it out but didn't. Trade Union movement educated him in respect for women. Talks of Terri Butler's abuse copped recently.
Jimmy Sullivan (ALP) Important that government hears this message (as in women). Men have to be aware that insensitive responses cause more harm. Thanks Premiership for her leadership.
Kim Richards (ALP) What we have heard is just the tip of the iceberg. There is a mighty 'boys club' and this motion is for you, listen! Refers to problem of social media exacerbating. We need to do better in that space.
Don Brown (ALP) I am not shocked. I would be shocked finding a woman who does not have a story. Talking about those in female dominated industries (childcare, aged care), they are paid less, we can put value on it, by paying them the same money.
Obviously not everyone in Queensland Parliament but was heartening to see so many on all sides of the chamber all agreeing in their own ways that things have to change for women.
"We have heard the throwaway line, ‘It’s not all men.’ However, when statistically every single woman has a story, there is something wrong with all men"
"There is a mighty boys club movement that has existed for generations among industries and I say to those in that club: this motion is for you; please pay attention."
"In rising today as a man I want to be reflective and perhaps sensitive in my language because I think that what the last month has shown is that insensitive words and insensitive responses can create more harm"
"When addressing the right of women to not be victims in a phallocratic society, it is the responsibility of each of us in this House to go back to our community..."
Sorry I did not include Joan Pease full transcript. Here it is now and as a mother, I have to say, all too relatable and broke my heart 😢
"Every single member of this House is elected by their community through grit and hard work. Many of
us do it while balancing family responsibilities - especially, but not exclusively, women. We earned our
place here just as you did."
Jess Pugh (ALP)
Woman Motion
"Each of us who enjoys privilege of any kind needs to recognise that we sit somewhere on a
sliding scale of complicity as the owners of privilege, and as the occupiers of that privilege we are to
some extent complicit in its perseverance."
Michael Berkman (GRN)
Woman Motion
"I hope the stories of survivors bring about real—real—ongoing change in our homes, workplaces and, more importantly, in our communities. Enough is more than enough."
"We need to understand that misogyny and sexism are not a spectrum or a sliding scale of harm, with off-colour blokey jokes at one end and the rape and murder of women at the other."
"Whether it is at the footy, on the street, on the bus or train or even on holiday, we have to stand up for equality every single time and set a higher standard."
"We also need to acknowledge the unique challenges faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in Queensland who are still facing racism, discrimination, disproportionate..."
"Real men stand up and support women. Real men speak out against the perpetrators of violence and they speak up for the change that we need in our society."
"If people like me in a position like mine cannot speak up, then how do we expect an 18-year-old being harassed in the workplace today to be willing..."
"Every single woman, regardless of background, creed, age or religious affiliation, needs to be safe in their workplace and in their community environment."
"What’s changing? Where to now? What’s going to
happen?’ They did not get the point. The point is: perpetrators beware. We will not be silent anymore."
"...victims and survivors...who together said, ‘Enough is enough.’ I was there, I saw you all, I heard you and I want you to know that we support and believe you."
"It was nothing but pure depravity on display in Canberra by male coalition staffers. If that is the culture of our young men, we have a national cultural problem."
"...importance of equality and justice for women. It is about condemning harassment and the assault of women across Queensland and it is supporting..."
This piece from 2011 by Jay Rosen is really interesting in light of attitude of many punter to many News Corp journos losing job yesterday.
I see many journalists blaming punters or treating them with disdain for not supporting them, maybe look at why? abc.net.au/news/2011-08-3…
We really do need journalists. The average person doesn't have same access to find out what Government is doing.
Journalists need support of people when under siege from a government that does not want any accountability or transparency and makes their job impossible to do.
Yelling at punters for not supporting them or not caring about their #RightToKnow or #FreedomOfThePress campaigns just increases the amount of people who have disdain for the profession and worse, increases the lack of trust.
and the 'other' female Jockey was "Mikaela Claridge" RIP 😢
Oh another aside with the @brisbanetimes Sunday sports splash, it is the other major Queensland news media outlet and NO mention at all of Sunshine Coast Lightning win.
Only going to Grand Final 3rd year in a row, no biggy 🙄
The government is just now realising that all the mainstreaming of hate they have done over the years is coming back to bite them in the arse.
Let's face it, these pricks wanted a terror attack, just not the one they got.
They are also betting on the fact that so many in our press gallery still follow that bullshit line of "well if the Minister says... we have to take him at his word..."
We all know how often these pricks have lied, not obfuscated, but LIED!
Serious question to journalists? 'retiree tax' & 'housing tax' are Liberal campaign slogans. Not actual 'things' at all?
Below says "attack". So what should be reported?
Woohoo! An 'attack slogan' is successful, go you good thing?
Or
"attack slogan" misleading voters?
I'm not asking this to have a go at Bevan, just the priority when it comes to journalism?
Importance of marketing success of campaign
vs
Importance of correctly informing the public as to what they need to know?
Thinking of Trump success? Would think 'reality' more important?
We see many journo's in the states lament they did not take Trump seriously and are now facing the consequences of reporting just the 'marketing' and 'campaign interest' angle.
National leadership is a serious issue, really deserves serious reporting imo.
Too many journalists more interested in the 'game of politics' & 'sensational statements' of candidates' is why the US currently has Trump destroying their nation and shitting on all their respected "conventions" of Govt.
This is a serious issue. As the US found, many of the 'conventions of Government' that Trump trashes are not rules, not part of the Constitution, just 'conventions' which all flavour of President had respected.
Riding roughshod over 'conventions' is a slippery slope.
It has taken reporters in the US quite a bit of time to call out the trashing of these 'conventions' by their President, but sadly, damage is now done.
In Australia, we have seen various Governments over the years try to skirt convention.
