Everyday since news of #ukricuts #gcrfcuts broke another set of previously unimaginable consequences occur:-
1) end of peer review for grants - it was already on a shoogly peg but who is now going to donate labour to laborious review of proposals - including risk assessments? 😐
2) Applications for funding - it takes two years constant work to go from idea to successful application with success rates low. To do this needs trust that if successful your work will be funded throughout (stage-gated). Right now I can’t imagine why I would EVER apply again.
3/ Partnerships. It takes years to build towards equitable partnerships in contexts of conflict & impoverishment. Some of mine are over 14 years in making. Steady, constant care. This is why they worked. Why they were funded. 1 secretive stroke of a 🇬🇧 pen and ‘poof’ - #ukricuts
4) Recruitment of participants. In 8 or 9 countries lead LMIC researchers are doing fieldwork; surveys; interviews to research effects of conflict & migration. We sign consent forms, people give time. Why would anyone participate in U.K. data collection ever again? #ukricuts
5) ResearchFish 🐠. I moan abt this platform regularly but believe strongly in mutual accountability. All through February automatic threatening emails arrive forcing us to fill out 1000s of audit boxes. Threat- no future grant funding for your HEI & partners - Well! #ukricuts
5) The 👿 is in this detail. So far everyone of these technical aspects represent largely hidden labour that makes research with international partners tick. And everyone of the effects is equally detriment to 🇬🇧 research & reputation - that’s how it falls with equitability.
6) Ethical Approval. The 36+ pages of forms peer-reviewed and required for research with people to take place at all. Designed to stop funders and 🇬🇧 HEIs being sued for researcher malpractice. Well. #ukricuts #odacuts
7) Contracts & 🇬🇧 collaboration agreements. These go back & forth w/ legal departments in set up phase. Designed to protect research and of course U.K. interests. Assumption - flawed I know- is that 🇬🇧 can be trusted but contracts will be terminated if others can’t #ukricuts
8) Increasing realising what a colossal stealth attack this is on 🇬🇧 ‘world-leading research’. Not even in the wildest of role reversal scenarios with #10 can I understand why you would destroy your own ‘global Britain brand. It’s not even ‘good’ disaster capitalism. #ukricuts
9) Open Access agreements linked to grants. Academic publishing sector is a mess - no doubt (with hon exceptions). Open access needs funding and is linked to grant agreements ... just been shredded. So #REF requirements by which we assess (I know! I know!) global Britain - poof!
10) #REF .... I can’t even... #ukricuts #odacuts
11) Research Officers. Our officer is amazing. Accurate. Clear. Knows what it takes to build partnerships. Embedded in network across 🇬🇧 HEIs of technical expertise. Now tasked with literally undoing all that work in spreadsheets. #ukricuts #odacuts Disregard for professionalism.
12) Data sharing agreements. Well, that will be a nil return. #ukricuts #odacuts
13) Web development. #GCRF websites are some of the highlights of 🇬🇧 digital learning. Show incredible depth of work and reliably evidence how Global Britain had begun to address #SDGs. All links with now be ‘broken’ 404 errors 🙁#UKRIcuts #odacuts
13a) No point in considering a career in cyber now, folks #UKRIcuts #odacuts

But there is hope 🌱 No. 10 saw the error of its way then - No shame in U Turns here google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.…
14) Recruitment. What. To. Say?

No more - please come and work with this ‘exciting’ project for 3 years (“it’s precarious, we’ll do our best - so far everyone did get a permanent-ish post in the end if they wanted it”) Adds insult to injury for precarity #ukricuts #odacuts
15) Equality & Diversity. @UofGEducation #RacialJustice report says “The disproportionate precarity of our ethnic minority staff who are between two and three times more likely to be employed on fixed term contracts.” gla.ac.uk/news/headline_… Higher for #GCRF #UKRIcuts of course
16) Vaccines and their like: Old article (h/t @justkenrick) but #oxfordvaccine “Prof Sarah Gilbert, [...] arrived at Oxford in 1994 to work with Prof Adrian Hill, a senior member of the team, on malaria parasite, plasmodium” Fastforward to 2020 theguardian.com/world/2020/nov… #UKRIcuts
17) REF: Okay... so we submitted our @UofGlasgow yesterday at 10.15pm. In past roles I've had plenty to do with REF but this round, others have been leading. I cannot imagine what the #GCRF & #UKRIcuts must have meant to everyone finalising the work. I mean....QR funding? Impact?
@UofGlasgow 18) "Research Integrity: Research carried out with a high level of integrity upholds values of honesty, rigour, transparency & open communication, as well as care & respect for those involved in research & accountability for a positive research environment" #ODAcuts #UKRIcuts
@UofGlasgow 18a) Research Integrity "These values, and the behaviours they instil, are central to a healthy research culture, whether in public or private research settings."

👉ukri.org/our-work/suppo…

Irony is dead. I mean really, really dead. Like service to the National Interest
@UofGlasgow 18b)Also Known As: - why I really had to resign as a strategic advisory along with with @JoBeall1 @FiddianQasmiyeh @ZoeNorridge @OlivetteOtele and Ayesha Siddiqi.
19) Financial Due Diligence: The pit in your stomach asking partners in LMICs to fill out the DD which is usually framed with the assumption everyone is a middle class professional in the UK.... with a bank account.

And it's UK who *could not* be trust with livelihoods.
19a) Due Diligence UK: We tried to bring this in as an aspect 'equitable partnership' as required by @UKRI_News . Remember those struggles? The blank faces? Well. #BtVS quote "The words I told you so are entirely redudant" #UKRIcuts #ODAcuts
20) Fiduciary Risk: No further comment.

Govt's own: assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/upl…
21) Systems Attack: This inaugurates potential beginning of systems collapse for research in UK Universities. This is how it happens. And not in a good way that will allow for clear-sighted independent research. This kind of change makes the whole system radically unsafe for all.

@kentbuse "The government has said the reduction of UK aid spending from 0.7 to 0.5 per cent of gross national income is a temporary measure."
Why such damage to 'National Interest" if temporary?

On Monday we launched our major £2 million #GCRF #UKRI peace building project. Yesterday the Govt announced cuts to international science the savagery of which has never been seen before, to make war #WDMs ⁦⁦@CMonaghanSNP⁩ ⁦@alisonthewlisstheguardian.com/uk-news/2021/m…
The savage cuts are taking immediate effect. The length, depth and consequences are as yet unknown but they will result directly in increases in poverty, violence against women & girls & the crumbling of civic cultural institutions - as our research to date shows. #ODAcuts #SDGs
#ODACuts to international science & research budget with our international partners in the global south are estimated at £125million “The MoD has said developing the next generation of Dreadnought submarines to carry the new warhead would cost £30bn plus a £10bn contingency.”
