Colombo had been negotiating for months to get a loan from China as the country’s foreign exchange reserves have slumped amid the pandemic.
Chinese influence in the South Asian nation has grown in recent years through loans and projects under the huge Belt and Road infrastructure initiative, raising concerns among regional powers and Western nations.
Under former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, Colombo borrowed billions from China between 2005 and 2015, amassing a mountain of debt for expensive infrastructure projects.

Sri Lanka was forced in 2017 to lease its strategically important Hambantota port to a Chinese company for 99 years after Colombo said it was unable to service the $1.4 billion debt from Beijing that was used to build the port.

The Jaffna office of the archaeological department informed Vali East Pradeshiya Sabha chairman, Thiagarajan Nirosh, that they would be clearing the area near the Nilavarai well, but T. Nirosh requested this in writing.
However, the archaeological department has begun work there without providing written documentation or information. They are also being accused of clearing land illegally.

The German governemnt is planning to secretly deport a large number of Tamil asylum seekers back to Sri Lanka on the 30th March. The German Tamil refugee community have been facing a large number of raids and arrests recently.
Relatives and friends of these individuals arrested do not know their whereabouts and these individuals have had their phones taken away and have had any forms of communications cut off.
